Opinion: Is it too hot to cook a shrimp okra & chicken gumbo in south Louisiana right now?

Just curious how y’all feel about cooking gumbo in the summer. My mom would only cook shrimp, chicken and okra gumbo when it was warm out. But once it was this warm she wouldn’t cook gumbo at all.

Actually i just hung up the phone with her and she said that’s not true. She said she made shrimp and okra gumbo last week. She said you cook what’s in season - okra are in season.

My wife always says this, and I don't get it. You get gumbo at restaurants year round, why wouldn't you cook it year round?

I've never understood these kinds of questions. People are smoking, grilling and boiling outside. Why wouldn't you prepare gumbo inside with the AC on?

Gumbo is a year round dish for me, but that doesn’t stop me from proclaiming, “It’s gumbo weather!” whenever we have a cold snap.

It’s not the 1920’s. We have A/C. No reason to not eat soups and stews.

Yep, I agree as I've never understood that either. I mean I eat red beans and rice on Mondays, have no qualms about eating meatballs and spaghetti, chicken stew, casseroles, etc. in the summer months, so why not gumbo.

My kitchen/den faces Northwest, and gets real hot in the afternoons. I don’t want to even turn on the stove, much less nurse a roux.

I get what you are saying. When it’s hot out I don’t think gumbo. Nothing better on a cool, fall day than a warm bowl of gumbo.

Yeah, I'll eat gumbo at any time, but there really is something special about a gumbo you cook on that first cold, wet fwinter day.
Even if I have gallons of the stuff laid up in the freezer, I'm making a fresh pot on that first "in the forties and raining" day. It's about the whole ritual, not just having a warm bowl of something to eat.

I agree and that includes any type of soup, stew or chili.
