One Night in Memphis (recommendations)

Will be in town one night with my 16 year old son. No real food type preference one way or the other. Just looking for a good non-touristy place. Thanks.

Gus's Chicken would be my choice, but I am not a fan of Memphis BBQ. Can get equal to it in East Tennessee, but there is a Gus's in Knoxville now too.

Back in the day Rendevous of however you spell it was okay when it was busy. I've eaten at Central and had a good meal. There is a place out in Germantown that served good BBQ but I can't recall its name. That was my old sales territory but that was many years ago. I'm not up to speed on what's good up there anymore.

Unless you like dry rub barbecue, I don't actually think Rendezvous is all that good. Central BBQ is my favorite. Downtown has a bigger dining room than the Midtown location if you're there on a weekend that may be busy. You can't go wrong with BBQ nachos on their house-made chips (be sure to specify that otherwise they default to tortilla chips).
Aldo's has a good pizza selection and a good bar, too. Locations downtown and in Midtown.
Gibson's Donuts is worth a stop if you're in East Memphis. Obviously not a meal, but good snack or breakfast.
Great steak - Folk's Folly in East Memphis.
Hog & Hominy gets a lot of attention from media, but I don't love it. It's not bad, I just think it's overhyped for what it is. Earnestine & Hazel's is another one - interesting location, burger is decent, but I was expecting it to be Memphis's Port of Call and it's just not.

Folks in this thread are on point. If you're downtown, the central BBQ. If you're out east hog & hominy. There's a Gus's downtown and out east if you're in the mood for chicken. For fine dining - Felicia Suzanne's if you're downtown and Andrew/Michael if you're out east. Also, you may want to look in to the Overton square area - second line and a Babablu are decent. Iris is good fine dining.

The above rant gives you some new choices that I don't know about. We used to drive up just a few years ago to eat out at Corky's BBQ or The Rondevous BBQ. Loved them both.

Gus's gets my vote. Memphis BBQ as a whole is overrated, imo. If you insist on BBQ, the top 3 (at least for me) are Central BBQ, BBQ Shop, and Germantown Commissary.

Just got back from Memphis last week and had Central BBQ, Gus' fried chicken, Hog and Hominy, and McEwen's. If I had to go back for one meal it would be Gus' fried chicken. Hog and Hominy was very good but not worth the drive for one meal. Central was pretty good but not better than the top BBQ places in New Orleans.
