Next month, as Popeyes celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, the family honors Copeland’s legacy with Secrets of a Tastemaker, a recipe-filled book inspired by Copeland’s larger-than-life personality.

...“We wanted to make this book both a biography and a cookbook because every single aspect of his life was surrounded by food,” Copeland Jr. says.

If Al could see how awful the food and service has become at Popeyes, he’d cry so hard his plastic surgery would burst.

I rarely go there but to me it tastes the same as it always has. The service just depends on how ghetto your city is.

Are we going to find out if there are really hot dogs in the red beans?

Al was a complete piece of shite, and his restaurants are gutter food establishments. Screw that guy and this sycophantic book.

Yikes. I knew him pretty well growing up and our kids went to school together. We apparently knew two very different people.

Did you know he was being investigated by the DEA for drug trafficking?

It sure seemed like he was the real life inspiration for Gus Fring from Breaking Bad.

I upvoted you for your sincerity, but yeah we knew two different people. I'll accept all of my downvotes, since people here appear to love him.

That old menu in the G&G article looks awesome. Stuffed flounder, fried gizzards, and fried livers

I never met Al but heard many stories that could back the POS view. He was a character for sure, whether good or bad, he is a historic figure of New Orleans. I would love to see this book, it sounds interesting either way.

I like Popeye's, but I don't eat it much. I can't remember when I've been to a Copeland's other than that it wasn't very good. However, the food at Copeland's on St. Charles when it initially opened was really good. I wish I could find a menu from there.

Is anyone going to elaborate why he was a POS?

Are we talking about Jr or Sr?

I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the old Copeland’s/Straya recipes from the 90s/early 2000s dishes.

I'm sure it's all a bunch of 2nd and 3rd hand "my buddy said" stories. He was definitely flamboyant so people automatically hated him for that. I was on his boat a bunch and made a few LSU road games with him in his RV. He got a shite ton of attention everywhere he went and most definitely welcomed it with open arms. He loved the spotlight.
