Mentioning Pizza Hut in the same conversation as Grimaldi’s is an injustice to the latter. While they both may be national pizza chains, that is where the similarities end. Grimaldi’s produces a world class product out of a coal oven that is stoked twice daily. Its pizza makers undergo intensive training and top notch ingredients are used. Every pie that comes out of a Grimaldi’s oven is quality checked and if its crust is not up to snuff, the pizza is discarded.
Pizza Hut, on the other hand, uses conveyor belt ovens, which requires no skill from a baker, utilizes premade dough and covers everything in a cheap oil sauce. Ingredients and labor are cheap at Pizza Gut, and the end product testifies to this process. Circle K pizzas are on par with Pizza Hut, among the worst pizzas ever made.

P.S. At some point Frank Pepe will enter this conversation. I have only eaten at the original, but I have heard its franchises make excellent pies. Whether it can scale like Grimaldi’s has (the Grimaldi’s in Destin makes a better pie than the original Grimaldi’s at the foot of the Brooklyn Brisge) remains to be seen.
I also just realized I did not consider Famous Famiglia in my rankings. The Famous Famiglia chains I have had in NY and NJ are outstanding. But the one I tried in the Atlanta airport was very disappointing.
All of the Chicago chains, from UNO to Giordano’s are just as bad as Pizza Hut. Malnati’s is okay, but does not sniff the top 10, even as a regional chain.

I’m looking ahead since Grimaldi’s is now offering franchises. It’s beyond regional but 46 stores I agree it doesn’t put it on the same level of locations the other shitty pizza chains offer.

If this counts as a national chain it’s easily number one. It was pretty cheap when it first came to Chicago but by the time I left it was fricking expensive.

I'm surprised Little Caesar's hasn't been mentioned, their thin crust is pretty good. Even if it wasn't so cheap, the Little Caesar's is pretty tasty. Grimaldi's is good too, but a pizza that costs $11 at LC costs $34 at Grimaldi's.

OP they reopened a new Pizza Hut place by my house. They shut the old one down about 3 years ago. The new one is a takeout drive through. I was in a pinch for time and needed something for the kids to eat and ordered a couple of pizzas. It was actually pretty good for a chain like that. I go back 3 months later, everyone had an attitude, and the pizza was not good. Stuff like that drives me nuts with these type of chains.

How is Grimaldi’s not a national chain? Does a restaurant need a location in every state to be a national chain? Does that mean that Cane’s is not a national chicken chain? Does it have to have locations in 15 states? But what if all 15 are on the East Coast?
Several states have come up with a definition for a national chain restaurant. The definition simply is a restaurant operating under the same name in three or more states. Perhaps you would like to create your own definition. Under that definition we shall then analyze multiple restaurant chains.
