But yes, it was weird to me, IMO a waiter should never discuss a tip with the patron. But everything was good, service was good and he deserved 20%. I only had a 20 on me so at $92, he got a lil over 20%. But it was fine.

I don't think it's the point that he shouldn't be "begging," I'm thinking it's more along the lines of any of actually discussing any of the above with a patron who is dining at an upscale restaurant where you are working is just beyond tacky.

I'm glad you had a good experience, though.

I can't help but think that a place with the history and renown of Antoines couldn't once again be a great establishment with the right sort of management.

And it has nothing to do with his two week hold. He made you as a tourist (even if you aren't) and was avoiding taxes and tip out to bartender/busser. So he probably told management, "Tourist at table 23 stiffed me on the tip." And management, which is nearly, non-existent did nothing about it.

Bad food is bad food.

I always write "cash" on the receipt if tipping with cash. I used to depend on tip outs a very long time ago. I know how sneaky servers can be.

Good review and good job on easing your kids into nicer dining venues.
I've been there twice and had good luck. Both times I was with a regular and we had his guy Charles taking care of us. One was a private party in the Rex room. Food was good, but not great.
For that price point it's worth a visit if you have never been

Isn't that 20-something chick running the place these days?

He also practically begged me not to tip with a credit card.
Which I don't mind after he told me they wait two weeks for their tips from CCs.

Absolutely unacceptable for a waiter to have this discussion with a patron. And one of many reasons why Antoine's will soon go the way of Brennan's.

I waited 30 minutes for the waiter to come get my bill when I went this summer. Had to get the maitre d' to go find someone to come pick it up so I could go back to work. The guy had been shooting the shite in the kitchen the whole time.

That's how I saw it. My Mom told me she and my Dad went once in 1987 and never returned. But it is a neat place to see. No rush to return but I will check it out again one day.

This, does not a sustainable business plan make -- especially for a place the size of Antoines. Unfortunately, it seems, they have been banking on this for their's for a long time now.

Think I know that guy. How was his service?

And for the record, It is a MASSIVE problem that a server would discuss a tip with a guest EVER. Especially using the "two weeks on his check" stuff. Sure, they want cash tips but this part of the experience is BS. Same thing happened to me at Felix's recently by an oyster shucker. Kind of expected it there, not by a captain at Antoine's.

Yes Cassie Blount is the owner.

LINK

She is 22 (or 23)

This is the weirdest line from that article/

quote:

Casie Blount was not raised to be a debutante, although her parents could afford to send her to the private Mount Carmel Academy and the University of New Orleans.

I could see if they said Country Day and Tulane.

Looks subpar. But who really cares, you're rugrats had a great time I'm sure .. cool experience for them, especially if this place goes the way of the Dodo they can say when they are adults that they once dined there.

Based on your experience with food, plating and service though .. I'd be surprised if you go back for a second helping of meh in the next few years.

I have a hard time believing this broad is responsible for the day to day operations of Antoine's.

I was thinking the "meh" was because it was a lunch special, and I wanted to try that pressed duck dish Bourdain got on no reservations. Though there are a few dozen other places I need to try first.

I didn't do any better when I took my daughter to her first "nice" restaurant. Had a groupon or something for Andreas. I'm just happy she enjoyed putting on a dress and going out to eat.

If you've been there recently, you might not have such a hard time.

Problem with Antoines is they are running a high end dining destination like a chain: kids menus, crayons, letting people in wearing shorts, etc... And it just isn't adding up to anything other than confusion.

Its like the old football saying if you have 2 qbs, you have no qb.
