I don't see how you can even mention the two in the same discussion.

Is this the location of the old Dockside (before they moved to Picayune)? I haven't been out that way in forever...

No, Dockside was on the corner of Haynes and Dowman. Castnet is further down, a few blocks past Read Blvd.

10826 Hayne Blvd. 504-244-8446

I used to work there. I ran that kitchen for about 10 years, helped develop it from a small kitchen into the operation it is today. It's a well kept seceret, thats why i suggested that Jason try it out, and i'm glad he was not disappointed.

They have a really good Veal and Macaroni special on Tuesdays, and they also do fried trout plates and po-boys that are worth the drive.

NO I AM NOT AN OWNER, NOR DO I HAVE ANY INTEREST IN THE BUSINESS.

Jason, if you ever wanna open another spot in BR, feel free to hit me up to pick my brain.

And althought it wasn't a shrimp poboy, had an irish dip from O'briens grille on the westbank and it was a 10 out of 10. Was pricey at $15 but worth it in my opinion.

Where is this?

It's on belle chasse highway (highway 23) in between the westbank expressway and terry parkway. It's kind of hidden behind a drive in daquari shop. It's where the old mudbugs used to be and think it is now a storage place. They used to have a 3-4 story regions bank right there also. Not sure if it is still a regions bank though. It's a small nice place that is a little pricey but has really good foods. One of the better if not best nicer dining places on the westbank in my opinion.

im pretty sure somebody said sherwood poboy changed hands recently ...it was a pretty good poboy I'm telling you ...

on a related note, glad I saw this thread b/c I didn't want to start a new one about Tommy's Fish house...finally tried it tonight... It was pretty good, but nothing special...i'd prefer sherwood poboy .... the bread was weird, almost like some spots of it were stale or dried out...shrimp were nice size and cooked right, but there was nothing to the batter...same with the catfish...plain jane .... I was underwelmed really :(

as far as NOLA, I will restate what I have said previously, the best shrimp poboy's I have ever had were obviously in NOLA :

R&Os (i've had about 200 of these probably )

and "The Radiator" from Cooter Browns "sports bar"

Get one at Johnny's in the 1/4. Don't even tell them how you like it, just say shrimp poboy. It'll likely be the best one you've ever had.

My last experience at Johnny's will be my last experience at Johnny's. About two years ago.

I didn't enjoy my sandwich and while I was eating I witnessed appalling hygiene practices by the food preparers and the busboy. I crossed them off my list forever.

What made those poboys better besides the bread. The batter? Size of shrimp? Think you mentioned one that had butterflied shrimp?

By the way, next time I'm in NOLA, I am going to try R&O's and add it to my reviews.

The type of bread
the toasting of the bread
the size of the shrimp
the preparation of the shrimp (butterflied)
the flavor of the shrimp themselves
the light but well seasoned battering of the skrimps
the consistancy of the poboy in general is perfection

you're gonna love it R&Os ....the oyster is wonderful there too

Sounds like the bread might have been stale. Fresh bread like leidenheimers, gendusa's, and even waynes don't have preservatives built in to them and go stale quick. Especially if they aren't kept in the cooler.

Don't know what others like, but I can't stand getting a shrimp poboy with a bunch of small shrimp on it. For me, it's like eating more batter and bread than shrimp no matter how many shrimp you load on. I want to get a good bit of shrimp meat and shrimp flavor in each bite. One wouldn't want an oyster poboy with a bunch of mini oysters, would one?
