I was already bummed that we missed East Side Show Room. Now I'm REALLY bummed! Will definitely hit it up next time we're there.

Stubb's BBQ was fricking awesome when I went there.

See, that was the one place that I felt average at best. I just didn't care for their bbq or sides.

Yeah, Stubb's is overrated. Awesome music venue, though. If you're going to do DT barbeque, go to Lambert's. Otherwise, head out to Lockhart.

Baton Rouge has 1/3 the population of Austin, but 3 times the murders.

Austin is amazing! Anyone who claims otherwise didn't know where to go!

There's a huge LSU following there, too.

And two LSU themed bars!

Austin is all about the experience/scene not necessarily the best food. Oasis, Hula Hut, and Shady Grove are exhibit A and sum up Austin IMO.

Yeah, like 10-15 years ago.

The Austin food scene has come along nicely over the last few years. It's no longer just about eating avg. Tex-Mex or American food while looking at water.

You'd be better off at Luby's or something. Threadgills used to be decent, not anymore.

Haven't eaten at a whole lot of places in Austin, but I definitely recommend Home Slice if you're in the mood for pizza.

I have only been on TD for 8 months, and I'm not even a very active poster.

Austin just isn't a good food town. :dealwithit:

The poster who said it's more about the experience is correct. Food isn't memorable, but I've had good times hanging out at Fred's Place, Shady Grove, etc...

Torchy's is aight....too salty for me. I prefer Taco Deli if I'm looking for that scene. Salt Lick is stupid. If you're going to drive out that far then might as well go to Lockhart or Luling for the real deal.

Foreign and Dmorstic is OK. Great risotto even though it gives you the shits. Thundercloud is way better than any chain sandwich shop. Polvo's is decent "and omg so Austin," as is Kerbey Lane.

That said, now that I no longer live there, there isn't a single place I miss going to. Only other city I can think of that I can say that about is Dallas.

It's an area well over 1MM people now... there are some good and very Austin-nesque places.

It's just those who grew up there act like it's god's gift to cuisine. While Houston, certainly NOLA, and even Dallas/FW have a better and more-established restaurant scene. Plus all the monthly TX fish wraps pine over Austin, furthering the myth.

Taco deli is legit, just a little farther out. Nice area once you get there. Nice view. Dog friendly, easy parking relatively speaking.

I second the decline of threadgill's (as of May 2012).
