Mother's is constantly slammed on here. To be honest, this is the most love I've ever seen it get on here.

I just go once a year...also I will steer some to Johnny's over Mother's almost every time...with that said, it better than most other places down there for comparable food.

It's usually people who don't live in or are not from New Orleans, as evidenced by the two "slams" in this thread. They think in inures them some sort of "cred" as being able to point out the most obvious of what they think is a "tourist trap."
Most people here or from here can appreciate it for what it is, even if they're only willing to eat there once in a blue moon, as most are.

I won't wait in line unless I have friends or family from out of town with me, but when it't not busy I'll definitely walk in and grab a roast beef.

YA Tittle - GFY. I don't pretend to be from New Orleans and do not seek NOLA cred. I work down that the street and just don't care for the place. It's that simple. The food is OK but not worth the hassle when there are more affordable and less crowded places nearby. Long lines + heavy hotel/guide book advertising + average food + higher than average prices = tourist trap. It's certainly better than any chain place and most places on the Northshore but unremarkable for NOLA.

Why did you change your opinion from "awful food" to "average food"?

During Saints broadcasts, they always show brief clips from Mother's, portraying it as this fantastic New Orleans food, so I decided that I had to check it out one day. One average oyster po-boy was $16 after tax, and I felt completely ripped off and sorry for the many folks who chose to stand in a long line just to get in the door.
As most have stated here, it's an overpriced tourist trap which has its name out there, just like ACME Oyster house.

I suspect the people who bash Mother's are locals with a lackluster knwledge of the NOLA restaurant scene or frequent visitors to NOLA from nearby who feel the need to berate Mother's so they can feel local.
Dude, what is wrong with someone saying that they simply don't like the place and can't come up with a strong reason to visit?
It's not like they serve something which you can't get anywhere else...and no one sure as hell goes for the staff's personalities!

I AM from New Orleans. I worked in the Texaco building right across the street from Mother's and I wouldn't even walk across the street to eat there. I could see the place from the window in my office, during Mardi Gras time there would be a line all the way down Poydras st and around the corner. I would sit and laugh at these people waiting in line for an hour or more for overpriced food that was just OK....just beacuse some tourist guide book said that it was THE place to eat.

ok, I'll play along, what ARE some good poboy places in Mandeville/Covington? heading there this weekend
Posted on 9/10/10 at 4:00 pm to charlied
Bear's Po-boys in Covington for the roast beef. I really like Pontchartrain Po-boys in Mandeville (Hywy 22) for fried seafood po-boys. Vigroux Po-boys is high on my list. They are in Mandeville on Florida (where the west approach merges with 190). I love their take on the Cuban - served on pressed french bread. Any of these places are at least equals to Parkways or Johnnies - which are high on my list of Southshore Po-boy places.

Bear's roast beef is top notch.

we have seen Bears in Mandeville by West Marine but I thought Ponchatrain had changed hands and names.Maybe I was thinking about another place on 22,will check tomorrow when we go to Madisonville.
Thank you................

A bottle of Pepto before you go.
I don't care what anyone here says in my opinion the place just isn't that good. With the Quarter right around the block there's 50 places that are preferable to Mother's.

A lot of truth in this...I love a Ferdi or a Ralphie occasionally. But I have a disclaimer, I usually get one when I'm at my lawyer's office and a runner goes and picks them up. So I don't have to stand in line, or pay, at least directly.

A lot of places in NOLA are overpriced, especially in the downtown/FQ area. Just because it's overpriced doesn't mean the food cannot be good.
Like mentioned, a lot of places do not bake their own ham/roast their own roast beef. Mothers is one of those places that do, and if you eat poboys, you can certainly agree that there is a huge taste and quality difference.
If you don't like it, simply don't go there. They aren't hurting for business. They are obviously doing something right and deserve props for being a lasting staple of cuisine in the area for past decades.

When people say Mother's bakes their own hams, what are they talking about? 1)Do they smoke and bake their own hams or 2)do they buy spiral cut hams, bake them, and make their own glaze?
And I agree with some of the other other posters, you always hear people putting mother's food down on here. A place that popular can not be terrible. Plus I've eaten there and have found it to be pretty good.
It always amazed me at my old place how some people could love the food (even say it was the best they ever had) and some people would say the opposite even if it was the same batch of food. People seem to be like this with all restaurants. You have people that love it and hate it.
