More Trader Joe's Torture: A preview of Trader Joe's, opening Friday in Metairie

Trader Joe's (2949 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 504-831-0253) second Louisiana location — the first in the greater New Orleans area — celebrates its grand opening at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The California-based grocery chain is known for offering food free of artificial flavorings, preservatives, synthetic colors and GMOs at low prices.
"We're a neighborhood grocery story with everything from basics like milk and eggs to exotic food and wine at great prices," says store manager (or "captain," in Trader Joe's parlance) Nick Parnell. "We work directly with vendors, cutting out the middle man, to keep prices low."

Really not that big of a thing.....I prefer a chain that I went to in Houston called sprouts...it's out of Arizona

They just opened a sprouts down the street from me and I've been very disappointed. It's ok but not really comparable to Trader Joe's.
I love me some Trader Joe's. Just tried the Mahi frozen burgers last night and they kicked arse.

They vary in quality. There is one in Corpus Christi and it sucks. Good for produce but their meat and seafood department is awful.
I've been to one in California that was very nice however.

I never understood the appeal of going to a store/restaurant first day they are open.
Surely waiting a few days to a week beats that mess. When they opened up Whataburger in Ruston a couple of years ago the drive through line spilled over into the service road. For a freaking Whataburger!

My wife went today. She said that they had an ambulance show up because someone fainted in the crowd. This was around 10 ish

I worked the grand opening in Baton Rouge.... It was a clusterfrick. Tons of people and a crew that had no idea what they were getting thrown into. My advice would be to wait a month, at least, and go early in the morning to beat the crowd.

I can walk to Trader Joes and never go. My wife will go there to get organic avacados, limes and cheap wine. Sprouts is another 1/4 mile away and it isn't much better. Their seafood sucks.....wreaks when you walk by the display case. Bought salmon there one time and it was a mistake. Whole Foods or Central Market is still the best grocery option.
