Batch 13 had one on the menu when I was there recently.

Doesn’t look quite as awesome as the Bennigans one was.

God I miss bennigans. The worst part is that their corporate HQ is here yet they have no location here.

Bennigans Monte Cristo Sandwich

9 slices honey wheat bread
3 slices cooked turkey
3 slices cooked ham
3 slices American cheese
3 slices swiss cheese

Batter

1 egg
1 -1 1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread.

Place third slice in-between and secure the triple-decker sandwich in the corners with tooth picks.

Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together.

Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder. Beat batter until smooth.

Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface.

Carefully place in hot oil and fry until golden.

When sandwich has turned a warm gold color remove from hot oil and place on paper towel.

Let cool for a few minutes before removing the tooth picks.

Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Serve with Raspberry jam.

I had a couple of those at Bennigan's many years ago. I've had it at Cheddar's at least once and remember it being good.

More recently, I've had it a few times at Katz Deli and always hits the spot (usually on Saturday at mid-morning/brunch time). The last time that I went, I added some of the Katz beef bacon (got it as a side) to the Monte Christo and was a worthy upgrade.

When I lived in Shreveport for a short stint and worked at the Pickle Barrel, we made Monte Cristo’s. Loved those things! My preference was without the powdered sugar add syrup or jam and ate it like a sandwich.

Is 9 slices of bread right? It has 9 slices of bread and only 3 slices of turkey?

That should be 3 right? Or am I out of my mind

Yes, 9 slices of bread is correct in that recipe. The directions to follow says it’s a triple decker. So one slice of meat each per sandwich.

The MC we made was only 2 slices of bread. I would recommend using Texas toast.
