Going to be in Gulfport on the beach for four nights. Looking for non franchise type restaurants and beach or dive bars. Any place between Bay St Louis and Ocean Springs. Never have spent much time there so any recs would be appreciated. Don’t care for the casinos.

Also is a day trip to Ship Island worth the effort?

Definitely come to Bay St Louis for a meal or two. The Sycamore House is really unique, but there are some other good options like Trapani’a, Fields, TBT...

There's about 4 or 5 non-chain restaurants on the ocean side all right by each other between gulfport and Biloxi that are all great. The Reef is great, as is Shark Heads.

There's a little known secret bbq place in downtown gulfport that I can't remember the name of for the life of me that is probably the best bbq I have ever had in my life as well.

ETA: Shaggy's is a local chain that can be hit or miss. If you want to try them, go to the one between gulfport and Biloxi as well. I've never had a bad experience at that location. The one on the bay is suspect

Ship island beach and water would be the only spot I would consider if you want the beach. The water will be clear, quite opposite of hwy 90 beach water. However, it’s practically an entire day trip.

Murky water bbq is a must. It’s in downtown OS. Once you stop here, you will see several bars and restaurants and shops you will want to visit. The grocery, glory hole, mosaic, Phoenician garden, this is just a few.

Downtown BSL is a similar experience, but I am more familiar with OS.

Grouper sandwich from 200 N Beach in BSL. I get no tarter sauce and I reconstruct it a bit, but it’s a tasty choice over this way.

One of you locals should give your take on the gas station PO Boys down there. Forget the name. Really good shrimp/oyster po boy the one time I had it.

Have you been to the Jourdan River Steamer? It’s excellent.

Bozos in Pascagoula is one that people rave about. Never been.

Pirate's Cove in Pass Christian gets my vote but im sure there are others that are just as good.

Ocean Springs is a good area for restaurants/nightlife. Quaint and concentrated. You can walk around the Govt. street area.

Half Shell Oyster House in Biloxi. The Redfish Orleans I had there might have been one of the tastiest dishes I’ve ever had.

Oyster Loaf and a Barq’s from Pirates Cove is worth the trip from Gulfport. Monday night pork chop at Bacchus PC. Fish tacos from Dan Bs in BSL. Trapanis. Murky Waters and the pizza place in downtown Gulfport. Jourdan River Steamer.

Same. With a bottled Barqs. I like it better than Parkway and others here in N.O.

R&O's is the only place i eat rb poboys besides Pirate's Cove. I need to give Radosta's a shot one day but havent been yet.

I drive by PC bringing my son to and from sports practice, and his first ever roast beef poboy was from there. He loved it. Every time he orders one now, from somewhere else, he looks at me like WTF is this shite?

Fayards right off the interstate in O.S. but that was years ago when I was there. I don't know if it still there and serving po-boys or not, but I would never leave town without stopping to get a shrimp/oyster
