For the last several yeas we have had a real issue getting 2% milk to last more than about 4-5 days in the fridge. Doesn't matter where we buy it from, what brand we buy, etc. This is despite the stamped date always being at least 7-8 days out when I buy it.

After Ida when we got our power back, groceries were hard to find so we drove to the WalMart in Picayune and got milk. The exp was 3 weeks out, which I thought was wild, but whatever.

Well, we bought it two weeks ago, and it's still fresh.

Is there something different about how milk is regulated in MS vs LA that would cause it to last longer?

Not sure about the milk but it does have a very long expiration date here. I don’t drink it but buy for wife and kids. Also eggs are dirt cheap in MS.

Louisiana has a dairy board that regulates prices...all stores have to make a 6% profit on all dairy products...LOUISIANA IS THE ONLY STATE THAT HAS THIS STUPID BOARD OR PERCENTAGE...

We've found that Borden's lasts longer than other brands for us, and that Horizon and other ultra-pasteurized brands last a long time. It has to do with how the milk is handled at the retailer's, too.

It could be method of pasteurization. I know most organic milk products have a long expiration period. Nothing to do with them being organic...they just pasteurize at a higher temp.

Had to switch to Horizon when it was me and my wife. After we had a kid though, we don’t keep a gallon long enough for it to expire

Borden/Brown's seem to do the best.

We've been buying the Organic stuff since we had kids. Better taste, lasts a lot longer etc.

Kleinpeter by far was the worst. Half the time we would buy it, and two days later it would be spoiled.

For whatever reason I’ve found that Horizon milk will last forever compared to other brands.

It is ultra pasteurized, which contributes to that.

I just buy great value at WalMart, or whatever store brand/generic that Publix has. I go through about 3-4 gallons a week with all my kids. My oldest doesn't drink much of it anymore, but my boys both drink a ton of milk. Oldest boy I don't think he's ever tried a soft drink. It is milk, water, or juice. And the youngest just turned 3 a few months ago, so it is just whole milk or water for him.

I find if the wife buys milk at Sam's it last until the date, but if she gets it from Walmart it will crap the bed long before expiration date.

I have lived in LA my entire life and have never had milk go back in less than a week if the best buy date is more than a week out
