know about the rendezvous. Well be staying downtown and we’ll hit it just because some in the group have never been. But, locals and foodies, where is the best in Memphis?

Also does the rendezvous take reservations? Called today but they’re closed Monday.

Central, Cozy Corner, Germantown Commissary and BBQ Shop is the general consensus. You'll get varying opinions of each on here but it all comes down to what kind of BBQ you enjoy. Personally, I've had the first three and wasn't blown away.

Memphis BBQ in general is overrated, imo.

Think sweet sauce, rather than the chili taste of Texas. Every place has its specialty. Rendezvous is grilled, not smoked. Their paparika based dry rub is the attraction. Sausage and cheese plate not bad either. Cozy Corner has Cornish Game hens. If you're going to try a BBQ Baloney Sammich, Cozy Corner is the place also. BBQ Store is all around consistent and good if you just need one stop. Blues City Cafe on Beale gets good marks for ribs. In general, Memphis is all good, but nothing to rave over. Two BBQ meals there of your choosing should get it done.

Insider tip - have them substitute their homemade chips for the standard tortilla chips.

To the OP - if you’re staying downtown, just go to central BBQ downtown (and gus’s). I’d skip the rendezvous. You can also go to cozy corner.

Chili has nothing to do with TX BBQ. TX BBQ is most notably simple rubs, post oak, and sauce free.

My advice to the OP: save your money until you can spend it on TX BBQ.

As a native Memphian, I go to Tops BBQ when I want BBQ. Even though it is a local chain, they are consistent with serving quality barbecue.

If u go to Rendevous, get the Lamb Riblets. Trust me.

I prefer BBQ Shop to Central City & Germantown Commissary, but thats just personal opine. All are pretty good.

And no, not all sweet sauce. I hate sweet sauce. Dreamland’s Sauce is my #1, but Dancing Pig from BBQ Shop n Memphis is my #2.

Payne’s should be added to the list. Not bbq, but Gus’s has killer fried chicken. Sides are only average though.

Gus's is definitely worth the trip. Best thing I had BBQ wise out there was pork BBQ egg rolls. Little shop that had them shut down though. I do like some Memphis style dry rub ribs though, hadn't been real impressed with any of the major places. Germantown Commissary was probably my favorite.

That's dumb, get out there and experience the different tastes. Lots of good BBQ out there to limit yourself.
