Masterbuilt gravity 800 - 4 years later

Coming up on 4 years since my first cook. That thread is locked. Anyway, I have been mostly pleased with this unit and the food cooked on it. Some general comments.
I never once used the griddle attachment on this. I used it twice and that was on my gas grill because it fit and the process was so much easier.
Over time, each sensor began to fail and it reached a point where I could not get around the issue with any fixes. So, I bypassed all of them. Grill works fine that way and not sure what I am missing by not having the fan turn off when any of the doors are opened.
Worst issue thought is the controller. Unless it's extremely cloudy or dark, I cannot see the numbers. I generally cook within a small range on this thing, so I can get the temps I want- it's just a PITA.
Finally, I responded to a Facebook post about these issues and almost immediately received a PM asking for model, serial, email address and shipping address. Whomever was messaging me seemed very helpful. Unfortunately, this was turned over to customer service and the final result was, I have the opportunity to buy a new controller when they are back in stock. Disappointing end, but probably my fault for getting my hopes up when asked for my shipping address.
Not sure how long I will keep this thing running. If there were a clearly better product for what I want in a smoker, I'd replace it. I just haven't seen anything, and am willing to hold off for now.

I have had to change the controller on mine. The soldering that held the the power connection was shitty and eventually broke off. I bought a new one and its worked fine ever since. Its super easy to replace.
The controllers on Amazon are cheaper and work just as well. They don't have Bluetooth/wifi though. But if you don't use that, it can save you some money.
Also, Get one of these and you can run the whole thing off a USB battery pack Amazon

Yeah I think it kicks the shite out of a pellet grill as far as the food it can put out
But yeah the quality is shite, people are even having issues with the controller on the upgraded XT.
Once you invest the mods to keep the thing going I think you’d be better off just buying a quality charcoal grill and then picking from one of the companies that specialize in the fans/controllers. Less of a pain in the arse to swap that out when they go out. meanwhile the actual grill will still be going strong. Plus you have the option to go manual if the electronics fail or don’t have power

For price point and money spent on mods vs. quality of produced smoked meats, my MB 800 has been amazing. Build quality isn't great, also bypassed switches, and can barely read controller, but wifi still works so I can control through app. Also keep it covered when not in use.
Agree with you, haven't found anything at a reasonable price that it easy to use, produces great smoked meats, and gives me 7-8 hours of smoking time without checking, then is easy to reload charcoal and wood. Frankly my biggest complaint is that thing burns through fuel.

If it were me and the grill was in good shape, and I would keep it longer after swapping the controller, I would go with a Fireboard with plug and play custom wire from these guys
I would mount it with one of these 3D printed mounts although it says they are taking a short brake right now. It slides in and out.
As for the XT having temp issues there is some truth to that. I upgraded to a XT a month ago from my 1050 to have more insulation, less flairup issues (my only real gripe) and the way the racks are laid out. The burn in went smooth but I had some issues with the temp doing my first cook (2 briskets) with the MB temp and my thermoworks RFX probes. Briskets came out fine but I haven't got to cook on it again to see whats what.
This guy just posted a YT vid of a possible fix for the XT temp issues. The way the shroud is over the XT probe seems like it could trap heat and make it read off vs another open-air probe in the pit. On my 1050 it just has a cover over the probe, but the XT is almost encased in the shroud. I plan to cut up the stock XT cover so its more open air and test it.
As for finding something else like the MBGS I haven't yet. The fact that it can run wood, charcoal, lump, or any combo has better flavor than a pellet grill, with the ease of running it like a pellet grill while also being able to get to 700 degrees. Before getting the XT I was considering something from loanstargrills that is a pellet grill, but the way they made their auger, you can run real wood chips in it as well for more real smoke flavor, but they are the only ones that sell the chips, and it was more expensive than the XT.

That's what I did and I am extremely happy with it. firebird and switch bypasses. It still has its quirks but it puts out quality food with minimal effort.

I got mine super cheap from walmart and its definitely well worth it. It's such the sweet spot for ease of use and taste, like you said there isn't anything else on the market worth considering.
I like the look of the step up in build quality of the XT, but that price is way too much considering I got my 800 for $200
I tried a few different electrics and a few pellet, just was never happy with anything after having done stick before those. This thing is damn close.

If the kamados aren’t your thing, those huntsman grills made by spider look cool

Nastybuilt is the HP of PC's and printers, some people get a good one and love it, but they are low quality and have a poor reliability rating. I spent $400 on a MB electric smoker, it was kept in a garage, except when in use. In less than 2 years the main panel went out, it was out of warranty, MB told me that a replacement part was not available.
All was not lost, I bought a small kettle type grill, used it as a smoke source and vented in into the MB cabinet.
I won't buy Masterbuilt, or HP, products ever.

Yeah kind of the problem with them, the posts a few up where someone figured out the temp issues by modding it…cool but you shouldn’t need to do that for the premium version of your grill. The XT was supposed to fix a ton of the “well no shite” issues from the the original gravities…and yet. God knows what’s going to frick up in a year or two if you’re stumbling out of the gate on basic shite.

Damn that sucks man. I'm another MB 1050 owner who has had zero problems. Bought it 4 years ago from the old guy up top, NolaGT.
That thing still cadillacs for me. But I'm ALWAYS looking for my next pit. Right now that pit is the Outlaw Smokers Patio Model. My only issue is the $4500 price tag.

Yeah, I got one from him too that bastard never even gave me a receipt or a bottle of bourbon
but 5 yrs later it’s still going strong
No major issues couple broken hinges and the bottom of the hopper is showing its age
it’s not the every day pit, pretty much just for the big cuts and overnight cooks
When this one dies I’m looking at the XT series

The gravity fed unit you can get from Academy sorta interests me. I already have a fan set up that would fit it. If there were a smaller version, I'd get one.

That’s the only other thing I have seen but it can’t get to 700 and halfway sear I don’t believe.
