This is probably a dumb subject but I just need to learn if I'm the weirdo or if other people are the weirdos.

When I'm making something with a ground meat in a sauce, like spaghetti, chili, etc., I mash the meat until there are absolutely NO clumps. I'm obsessive about this.

If someone serves me a bowl of chili and there are hunks of unmashed ground beef in there, I seriously lose all interest and desire to eat it. Those hunks don't taste right and, imo, show some laziness. It's probably on my top 10 list of pet peeves.

So are y'all meticulous mashers or do you really not care?

Put it in a blender then you can drink it out of a sippy cup.

I also prefer no lumps of meat in meat sauce and ground beef chili. I don't like the meat to get tough, so I use one of these which works wonderfully well.

I enjoy meatballs just fine, but not clumps of meat.

I like a clumpy chili when I make it. Dont want it to look like a soup.

I like it broken up super fine for most things...meat sauce, hot dog chili, tacos...pretty much anything except chili with beans meant to be eaten on its own (as opposed to hot dog chili), then it can be chunkier. My son is so maniacal about the "mashed" ground beef that he uses a potato masher after the spatula. His browned ground beef is perfection.

If you are asking if you are weird or are the others weird about mashing meat. I am going to put my vote on the side that you are the weirdo. What’s wrong with just chopping at it with a wooden spoon or spatula?

It’s like a SNL skit with Dan Aykroyd, obsessively mashing is a little over the top!

When I make chili I also use small chunks of beef cubed in it along with the cooked down ground meat. If the ground meat is a bit clumpy, I'm not put off by it. But I'm not talking about large chunks, more like 3/8" square or so.

I’m the same way. Chili or spaghetti sauce and that shite better not be over 1/16” clump size

I dislike the texture that you apparently appreciate. I like coarse ground beef for chili. I want something I can chew, not a saw dust fine babyfood meat purée.

I buy chili grind at Calandros when I make chili. Might make one this weekend.

An entire page of replies and not a single joke about mashing his meat?

I am disappointed.

I've never really heard anyone say mashed ground meat, though. I chop it. I used to use a wooden spoon, but I got something like this at Walmart and it's pretty sweet.
