This is from a bag of Full Circle lump. I wasn't expecting much, but it surprised me to the good. Burns hot with no sparking. I will buy another bag and see if it is consistent.

Haven't heard of that brand before. I've got some chunks from the KJ Big Block that i actually have to split, because they are too damn big. Same thing for the FOGO.
I was really surprised at the FOGO. Maybe i got a bad bag, but it was pretty shitty all around. Good size chunks, but the sparking continued throughout the entire cook.

3 best I get in my area are B&B Texas Size XL Premium, Bayou Classic, and Komodo Joe XL

BGE is royal oak....
I use Rockwood and Wicked, I prefer Rockwood. Both of them work well in all applications. I get it at Goodwood. I’ve also used Blue Oak, but I’m not sure who bags theirs for them. These are a little more expensive, but well worth it. I think like $25 a bag.
My buddy used some lazzari recently in his Kamado Joe. It had some massive chunks in it and he seemed to like it.

This thread delivers!
Solving the nation's most pressing problems one post at a time.
Just found on eBay:
Royal Oak Grill Chef's Select Premium Hardwood Charcoal Briquettes, 40 Pound Bag.
$71.43 shipped for 2 bags. Cheaper than I could find in store. Always been a lump man myself, but it seems to go out quicker than I want for extended cooks. Going to try these for the next set of ribs and see if I can extend the time more.

I got a bag of Blues Hog Lump a few weeks back and am very happy with it, so far, but my experience is that the last third of the bag can be where the problems are.
I got some FOGO (black bag) recently and was disappointed as it was about 20% dust and tiny chunks that fall through the grate before they burn. I think that sometimes this could be a problem in handling where the chunks break up, creating more dust and small chunks.

Just picked up a bag of Frontier from Sam’s Club, which on further inspection is made or at least distributed by Royal Oak. Description says three different premium hardwoods. Will scope.
ETA lot of good and recent reviews on Home Depot website.

I’ve used pretty much every bag of lump you can buy over the pass 10 years using a ceramic. RO is the easiest to find and is decent for anything. I swear over the last few years their quality has gone way down as far as size of lump. They do carry a RO XL now that has larger pieces. BGE and Kroger are RO. I’ve never understood paying more for the BGE.
For me, Wicked is the best especially for low/slow. KJ and Rockwood are quality as well.
This board got me excited to try some FOGO. Went to get a bag last week to try. When I picked the bags up they felt like a bag full of small pieces. Maybe those small pieces burn slow? I didn’t buy.
Tried the Blues Hog the other day. Pretty nice stuff but burned hot and made a lot of ash.

Whatever the brand, look for charcoal made from quebracho wood. Quebracho is a very dense wood and will produce charcoal that burns hot AND long.

Normally use BGE brand, and had settled in to that being my favorite. Found myself without any on a Sunday, and had to go to Lowe's. Picked up B&B Quebracho, and it has been very good. would use again without reservation.

Royal Oak is what I usually use because it does a decent job and is easy to find. Wicked Good is good, but costs more.
Cowboy is pure trash and B&B is not much better. If you get a bag of this stuff, wait until you need to clean your grill out, fill it up, open it up, and light it. That's all Cowboy is good for.

Lately, Royal Oak has been trash IMO. It’s changed.

Yeah I remember this thread now that you’ve bumped it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, Royal Oak has been my go-to for a few years now, I opened a bag over the weekend and its almost as bad as the Cowboy brand crap now. Tons of dust, very few big pieces, mostly tiny little chips, even found some rocks, bricks, and metal banding. Pretty disappointing in a brand that's been pretty solid for me for a while.

Hate hearing that. I'm going to need a new bag soon.
