I’ve grown up on the typical fast food diet. Considering moving to lower sodium canned soups to save money and lose weight. With some salads and solid meals a few times a week. My question is: Is replacing the times I eat fast food with canned soup better for me? I know both are processed but which one is the lesser of two evils?

Cook some damn food… chicken breast… I got fatter too in the past few years for other reasons but eat real foods not in a package, can, or box… move more. It’s not rocket science

Go to Costco and get while chickens.
Drop one in a crock pot with some bone broth. Add veggies like onions carrots celery. Herbs that you like. Season to taste.
Cook until the bones pull out easily.
Debone.
It’s very good and makes a lot.

Well I got the message lol, I will learn to cook. I’m serious about getting healthier though so any advice to someone who is starting out and wants to eat clean will help. The whole chicken idea is good but I don’t trust myself to not get salmonella from that. Plus I don’t own a crockpot.

You’re in college, don’t worry about sodium.

Yes, replacing fast food with soup will help you lose weight because of the calories. To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories. It’s that simple.

The best thing you can do is download an app that tracks calories and start using it. Learn how many calories you’re eating each day.

The soup thing is fine; I don’t know why it was downvoted. If you are eating that versus fast food, you will lose weight. Cut out soft drinks. Drink water. Limit the sweets. Start with that and gradually improve. Move from canned soups to making your soups, grilled chicken tacos, salads, etc. Protein and vegetables. Make your changes slow and they will become lifestyle changes.

If the chicken is falling off the bone from being in boiling liquid you will be fine.
Crock pots are cheap, but you can also do it stove top. The crock pot is just easier because you don’t have watch it.

You can also do a good soup with beef.

Don’t be afraid to try stuff.

Tick Tok world these days.

You’ll be fine. If cooking a chicken beast in a pan, just cut it in half at some point that looks “cooked” to you and make sure there’s nothing raw on the inside.

Definitely learn to cook ASAP in college. Unless times have changed, it’ll be an easy way to impress girls who go over to your place. Seriously.

Where are you going to college? Everyone told me I’d gain weight in college, but I never did because campus was so massive I was easily clearing 2 miles per day. Plus I waited tables and was on my feet 4-5 hours per shift.

Get you a crock pot. Throw some chicken and taco seasoning and a jar of salsa in there, cook on low for 6 hours, and you have mexican shredded chicken to do what you want with.

This is a great idea. Use black beans and corn as an alternative from time to time.

You mention weight but also health. Obviously you lose weight by taking in fewer calories than you burn but you can do that eating crappy food.

As one poster said, the sooner you learn to cook the better. Whole foods (not Whole Foods) will do both.

Learn to cook boneless skinless chicken breast/thighs and rice. That can be a nice base for a lot of meals.

Do you walk/bike around campus or do you take some kind of transit? If it's the latter, switch it up and start walking or riding.

Like others have said, swap out fast food for protein packed home cooked meals. Chicken breast and rice can be done a million different ways.

Try not to fall in the trap of "healthy" fast food like smoothie king, it's full of sugar.

If you drink, cut back on the booze.

When I was in college, which included being broke, I’d eat a couple hard boiled eggs for breakfast on-the-go, bring a sandwich and carrots in my backpack for lunch and make chicken and broccoli for dinner. None of that breaks the bank, and it was incredibly easy. Of course, I should qualify that Wisconsin basically kicks you out of the dorms after freshman year, so it’s easy to find ways to cook healthy for cheap. It’s pretty difficult when you’re doing residence hall cafeterias.

Wisconsin is a big campus, so walking was an essential part to my day. Never took the campus bus. I’d get multiple miles in each day and was able to get to the gym a few times each week after I was able to get a better sense of time management with my classes for that semester.

The easiest thing to remember is this: when you go to the grocery store, shop on the perimeter. If you find yourself shopping in the aisles, you’re doing it wrong.

Of course there are exceptions like oils and spices, but it’s a good general rule.

I used to buy ground meat and do tacos or taco salads

Make a big salad and top it off with a couple scoops of taco meat. Don’t even need dressing. Bag of greens, meat, seasoning, veggies and tortillas all comes out to like $12 and will give you 3-5 meals

When I noticed I was gaining weight in college, I went from drinking 3 cokes a day to 0 and I lost 20lbs. Even now when I do drink soft drinks there are so many zero calorie options that don't taste half bad.

I also learned to cook in college. You don't need to be fancy or need gadgets like air fryers or crock pots - those are just for convenience. Learning to like chicken breast and rice got me in the best shape of my life. You can buy enough chicken breast and rice for a week for around $10.

Also downloading MyFitnessPal or similar app, and using it consistently with a food scale will do wonders. Just being cognizant of what you're eating, and how much a normal portion size really is, will help a ton.

It’s probably five for someone in college. But they are loaded with sodium so you’re cutting the calories but sodium isn’t the greatest for you.

Canned items can be fine. They have a lot of can vegs with no salt added.

Learn how to oven roast vegetables, super easy and versatile. Also learn how to saute chicken or fish in a pan. Add some salads and you're there.
