Headed to Houston (technically Sugar Land) for Easter weekend. I have two questions for the board.

1. What’s the crawfish scene like there? I recall HEB having some. Is it quality? Is it a nightmare to reserve, especially on Good Friday, etc.?

2. I could pick up two sacks in Baton Rouge and bring them with me. Anyone ever done this? We plan to drive Thursday night and boil for lunch Friday morning. Will they stay alive or am I wasting my time?

Go to Tony’s, they can set you up for transporting them.

every year we get these posts, and the common link is it cost double in texas for what you pay in louisiana and they are smaller

it definitely would be a wise move to precook or bring the live crawfish with you when you go

I wouldn’t drive from Houston to Rosenberg for crawfish, no matter what the price.

This wont work for you but I am posting because I am guessing every area has a similar situation.

I used to get them from HEB, but the last couple of years they have seem to be almost a dollar more a pound than the local shacks. I would search around on FB or something and find a local place that does crawfish. Almost all of them sell live and right now they are nice. My place in Kingwood has been about $3.25 on weekends but we got them on Tuesday for $2.50 a pound. They had some sacks at $2 a pound but the guy said they had a lot of dead ones and the extra .50 was worth it as he sorted those and cleaned them. All were live and great.

Most HEBs don't reliably take reservations. Driving them in from BR would be fine if you keep them iced, lid cracked, drain open, and something on the bottom to keep them out of the water (like PVC pipe). I've kept crawfish in sacks for 24+ hours this way without any trouble.

Cajun Gourmet has quality crawfish, they take reservations, and you meet them at a drop point in your general area the day of your reservation. https://cajungourmetcrawfish.com/

Between BR and Houston is the Crawfish Capitol of the World. Stop and get you a couple sacks and ice them down.

Layer of ice, old towel, sack of crawfish, towel, more ice. Make sure the towels are wet. Leave the plug open. They will be fine the next day.

Cajun Gourmet sold me two sacks with about a 1/4 of them dead a few weeks ago. Never heard back from them when I let them know about it.

Captain Brads, Tomball. She has live crawfish. If you want to order some, let me know. I’m good friends with the owner.

Never had that experience with them. Sad to hear they didn’t get back with you.

Had a similar experience with Boyd’s a few weeks ago. At least 10 lb dead across two sacks.

Ah damn. I know nothing about them other than what I see on their FB page. There prices are crazy low and this may be why.

I was so bummed... I was holding 3 or 4 in my hand for a minute or so just begging them to twitch. Think I paid $4/lb. Maybe less I can't remember now.

Picked up a sack from Lake Jackson HEB a couple hours ago. This store doesn't reserve them. First come, first serve only. First time I've come across that with HEB. They look good, boiling tomorrow. $3/lb.

They also cook & sell by the pound in front of the store so I'm guessing they order a lot for the weekend. Bit of a gamble though if you're having a large boil.

Maybe if comparing to the Acadiana area this is true but Houston gets as good or better product than BR and Nola and you find plenty for the same price
