Another thread asking about the best seafood in Baton Rouge got me thinking. Ralph & Kacoo's has been open since 1969 and is touted as a seafood restaurant (or as seen on their awning "THE seafood restaurant"), and they're usually busy, which makes me very curious as to why it's rarely mentioned here. I'm not lobbying either way as I was only there once in the late 90's.

Since it's not recommended much at all here, is this place one of the tired dinosaurs like Drusilla's or do they have decent seafood, and if so, why no mention, and what's good there?

So has the quality gone down or has the palate of Baton Rouge changed over the years? I'm sure they're using the same hushpuppy recipe for instance.

I used to go there early 2000's to go look at the animal taxidermy. As a kid, that was awesome. I went there with my brother in 2012 (I think) and there was no taxidermy. We ate anyways and the food was fricken disgusting. I wanted to off myself after being there it was so depressing. Not a single soul in sight and seriously, the food was nasty.

Way back when the actual Ralph was married to the actual Kacoo, it was a decent place. That was a long, long time ago, and it was in False River. It was sold to Picadilly (yes, the cafeteria chain) in 1988 and has pretty much sucked ever since.

It's been years since I went there, but the last few times were awful. Even the hushpuppies didn't seem the same. I used to enjoy the crawfish bisque and some hushpuppies or sometimes the stuffed mushroom app which I loved as a child. I didn't eat all my food the last time and it was only the bisque and hushpuppies.

The one plus that came out of this is that Picadilly now has good gumbo. (or at least it did the last time I ate at one, now more than 10 years ago)

We eat at the one in Bossier about once/year and get the stuffed shrimp everytime and not disappointed. Also, I have yet to find any restaurant that has better homemade hushpuppies and the stuffed potato is usually pretty as well.

I can usually go to just about any restaurant and find a dish that I like. The one in Bossier still stays pretty busy from what I've seen.

Ate there once. Shreve-Bossier location several years ago. Thought it was hot garbage.

The they recently bought out one of the big places on the causeway in Mobile. The former Lap's building. Somebody must be eating there.

I ate at the one in BR the night before the Bama - LSU game in 08. It was good from what I remember.

I've eaten at the one in Bossier several times. I don't remember ever having a bad meal.

We converse about food and NASCAR. If you weren't a Saints fan and Bama fan, we could be friends.

The oxbow. It was a great place on the river to get some really good seafood back in the day. Both Ralph and Kacoo were good folk.

While it's not a terribly difficult recipe to figure out, I do have their original hush puppy recipe, although it has to be proportioned. And their fried shrimp recipe. Their cook who created it was a close family friend. But I think the recipe makes like 300 hush puppies.

Last time I ate there was about 10 years ago. I recall it being OK, but I'm a sucker for fried seafood. You have to really screw it up for me not to eat it.
They fixed up the bar a few years ago and my wife and I went there for a drink, but it wasn't that memorable.

I'd kill for some here in Dallas. Seafood here is pretty shitty for the most part.

I'm talking fried fish mainly, and good gulf oysters, and non shitty crawfish. Outside of Aw Shucks and the OG dodies, both on Lower Greenville, there ain't shite.

Would you mind sharing that recipe? Is the one on Nola.com correct?
