for those of you who live in the Lafayette Area, please advise me of the following: best farmer's market in town. Is there one w/i biking distance to campus area/downtown?

Any good produce stands in Lafayette? I googled and I see one in Breaux Bridge and one in Opelousas.

Also, can you rank the grocery stores in order of how awesome their selection is. Dont really care about produce if I can get to a farmers market or produce stand. Im mostly interested in butcher and being able to buy stuff like the bulk isle at whole foods.

And, Ive already tried the burger at southside bakery. Yum. Any other hole in the walls that need to be in on my list? Best bars for live music venues (non cover band type stuff).

ETA: for gardeners, what are your favorite nurseries to frequent and why?

Rouse's in Youngsville is the only grocery store around until they open the new one at Congress & Bertrand. There is a Fresh Pickens at Beadle & Kalise Saloom and I think there's a farmers market in the Oil Center on Saturdays. There are tons of good meat markets around; best stop, don's, heberts, poches, etc.

There's a Rouse's Grocery in Youngsville. I haven't dealt with the meats, there, though I saw dry aged beef in a free standing clear walled fridge when I was there.

I like to buy meats at Joey's on Bertrand.

A few miles past the Mall, in Maurice, is Hebert's Specialty Meats for meats and the best boneless stuffed chickens I've had in the state. I buy quite a few things, there, when I visit.

For the best jumbo lump crabmeat I've ever bought, go to Chez Francois on Evangeline Thruway right at the RR tracks not far from I-10. The prices are always better than anywhere else and they boil and pick their own crabs, daily. Had some over the weekend and many of the lumps were 50 cent piece size.

I almost forgot! Go to Don's Downtown and have the shrimp gumbo with some hushpuppies.

Someone brought me some crawfish bisque from Don's Seafood Hut over the weekend. I thought it had a fishy taste and while there were 4 huge stuffed heads in the order, they stuffing had zero flavor. The color was nice and there were lots of tails in it, but it just didn't taste too great. I don't know if that's the same bisque I've had at Don's Downtown or not. The last time I had it at the downtown restaurant it was very good. I've never eaten at the Hut.

I like to go to Red Cedar Grocery just off Johnston behind the Borden's store for Greek and Lebanese goods. They serve sandwiches and other things, as well, for lunch. Very near the campus.

Prolly the one on the corner of Ambassador Caffrey and Kaliste Saloom. Neither is close to Downtown.

i drove from my place to there this weekend its about 10 miles away. Im excited about having that in Lafayette, though Im sad to give up calandros, whole foods, fresh market, and my produce stand all within a few miles of work.

I will probably get meat at the specialty shops. I do that periodically here already.

And, Im looking forward to the new addition. Anyone know when Rouse's will open on Bertrand?

I think you'll probably find some things as you get settled. There's a Fresh Market on Kaliste Saloom, so at least you have one!

Red Cedar Grocery
It's actually called Cedar Deli, and I highly recommend hitting this place up for lunch. You won't find any produce there, but they do carry Mediterranean pantry necessities. This place is a true locals joint.

Another hidden gem in Laffy is actually at Osaka in the same strip as where you had your Southside well done and overly spiced meatloaf burger (lol). Toss away the Japanese menu (I'm not impressed) and ask your server for the off menu Korean dishes. The owner is Korean and still loves to cook fantastic authentic dishes upon request (the restaurant used to be his Korean restaurant, but the demand for that fare was minimal, so he switched it to a Japanese restaurant. He's thrilled anytime someone wants Korean). The fresh bacon/pork belly is one of my favorites.

2Paul's has been one of my favorite spots lately for barbecue.

Pimon Thai has good Thai food.

As far as live music, check out Bisbano's. Don't let the link fool you. There's an upstairs average pizza place (I don't recommend it for the food), but downstairs is a bar with live music virtually nightly. There's a lot of jazz, some avant garde, and locals with open jams on occasion, and I can't recall there ever being a cover.

...and if you've had a couple too many and it's 2:30am, all you need to know is two words: Mel's Diner.

i didnt live close to target in BR either, so no biggie. I usually stock up on paper products and toiletries and if i run out of one thing i run into a family dollar for tooth paste or whatever i need.

Used to have a farmer's market on Foreman Drive about 2 blocks behind Lafayette High behind "Corner Pantry". I forget which days of the week they were there though. Maybe Tues and Thurs?

i passed that on 90 this weekend. is that even in Lafayette Parish.

And, what burger do you recommend since you dont like southside's meatloaf? My friends are gonna help me move. Im going to treat them to dinner somewhere in Lafayette. Where is a good place that won't break the bank? (10-15 per entree max)
