I'm in dire need of some kitchen upgrades. Going to add some things to the birthday/Christmas list. I think I've narrowed it down to a cutting board, cast iron skillet, chef knife.
What would be your top 3 kitchen essentials?

How much do you want to spend?
NVM, saw birthday/Christmas list.
That's a very difficult question. Dont think I could narrow it down to three, but I bake a decent amount and cook from scratch when it makes sense.
I really like the half shet pan with wire rack:
Amazon
It's great for roasting vegetables and a meat for an easy one pan dinner for 2 to 4 people.
Chef's knife is a must have. As is a good cast iron pan for many dishes.
Obviously need a cutting board for the chefs knife.
I use my kitchen scale a lot.
Also have a great set of kitchen mixing bowls of various sizes I use all the time for prep.
Immersion blender with various attachments is very nice and handy.
Instant read thermometer and probe thermometer are MUST HAVE items if cooking meat.
Sous vide machine is also a good addition.
To narrow down to 3:
Chef's Knife
Enameled cast iron skillet or good older version
Instant read meat thermometer

Get a Victorinox chef’s knife, a Lodge skillet, and a Boo’s cutting board. Your grandchildren will fight over your cutting board one day.

6” chefs knife, large reversible cutting board, 5 quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven. If I get a fourth and a fifth, I want a 4 quart heavy saucepan w lid, and a decent stainless steel mixing bowl.

I would say those are essential. But maybe not as much as a can opener or a 6 quart pot. Hard to say without knowing what you have.

Agreed.
Some items can probably be at least functional as you build up a better inventory.

I second the probe thermometer (instant read.)
A Dutch oven.
Pressure cooker.

Immersion blender a must and hasn’t been mentioned yet

I mentioned it.
It's tough to narrow down to 3 items, but I wouldn't consider it in the top 3.

Hungry, I looked online and there seem to be a lot of options/prices. Would you suggest a Lodge(looks heavy), or something light weight? I am thinking about putting on my Xmas list also.

The enamel lodge is a good value, but there are others out there.
Depends how much the gift giver loves you.
Le Cruset is the gold standard of enamel Dutch Ovens.

That is the best addition to my kitchen, along with a German chef's knife, in the past couple of years.

I would like a weber kettle, a knife (dont know much about kitchen knives though), and a cutting board.
I have a nice weber propane grill, but would like to get into smoking on a kettle. Any recommendations for a knife? I would like a Boos block, but they're expensive, they are a local company though.

What do you have? What do you need? Top three pans I wouldn’t want to go without are:
11”-12” thick copper sauté pan or rondeau (tin or silver lined)
12.5” Demeyere proline skillet
2 quart thick copper saucepan

wrong, staub clearly makes the superior dutch oven

Always the contrarian.
They are neck and neck.

Staub is fine from what I've read but I wanted to go with the classic and had the means available.

So "essentials" may have been the wrong word to use. I have all of the basic stuff that you'd find in any kitchen. I guess what I'm asking is.. What are those items that you don't regret spending the extra money on to upgrade? What items really helped improve your cooking experience as a whole?
All of the answers so far are great. Thanks!
