So I pulled a Pyrex out of the oven that was on 425 for about 30 minutes.

After removing the food, I put the Pyrex in the sink and made the mistake of hosing it down while still piping hot with the water sprayer attachment on the kitchen sink.

The Pyrex immediately shattered into a million shards of glass, many of which fell into the garbage disposal.

Hard lesson learned.

What are some other kitchen disaster stories?

I had a similar experience making microwave roux.

The large Pyrex measuring cup I was using exploded as soon as I stirred it a little.

I watched Alton Brown make a smoothie with the lid off of his blender. I’m not sure why it didn’t make an enourmus mess with his, but when I tried it, I got blueberries and yogurt on the ceiling.

I had a pizza on my BGE outside. I was prepping the second pizza inside. When I walked outside there was a five foot flame coming out the top stack and the temperature needle was buried.

Apparently the pepperoni grease made a fire and cracked the stone from the heat.

What even happened here?

ETA: Friend heated up his oven without checking to make sure it was empty. His roommate had put away some plastic cutting boards in there for storage. It took him hours to clean all that melted plastic up.

I read about a woman who opened the over door, Pyrex exploded, and tiny shards of glass went into her eyes.

Might want to share this with the guy who is leaving his pressure cooker on while going to run errands because his wife wont watch it.

Boiled some water in a glass cup in the microwave.

I forget the technical term for it, but the water reaches boiling temperature but doesn't actually "boil" until something agitates it.

Well I go to grab the glass out of the microwave and boom, boiling water starts spraying out of the glass. Luckily, it barely caught my hand.
Weird/cool/dangerous phenomenon however

I am actually pretty lucky The glass stayed mostly in the sink and didn’t shoot out at me. I would have been in bad shape as I was directly in the line of fire had it decided to explode outward. Instead it just sort of shattered in place and downward into the garbage disposal. That by itself was a bitch.

Had a similar experience with a smoker during a competition. Someone had placed rubber hoses in the horizontal portion of the smoker and we cranked her up to temp not knowing until we smelled it. Luckily, the rubber didn't melt and the smell subsided pretty quickly.

Another, really stupid one, from when I was around 8 years old:

I put a raw egg in the microwave.
Fast forward 3 minutes and the egg exploded with such force that it blew the microwave door open and got egg everywhere.

I was round 8 yrs old and mom was cooking bacon in the gas oven. Before you know it we had a grease fire, she then tries to put it out with water … dad smells smoke, walks into the kitchen observing the flames and says … WTF is going on in here ?

The first time I made gravy steaks my gravy didnt come out as thick as I like it. So I remembered that my mom would mix a little corn starch and water m, mix it with that gravy and it thickens it a little. Only problem is that I used baking soda..... talk about make a huge arse mess, had foam all over the stove and kitchen.

The Tupperware corporation was sued (and lost) when a consumer saw a photo in one of their sales catalogues showing a cooked turkey in a large Tupperware storage container. Of course the person set their house on fire when they attempted to cook their turkey in the plastic Tupperware storage container and left home, then returned a couple of hours later to find their home on fire.

Cooked a Ponce for the first time by myself and forgot to poke holes in it with a fork. It exploded, and I had Ponce and gravy on my kitchen walls and ceiling.

Not kitchen, but on my BBQ pit in college. Turned the propane on, hit the ignite button, nothing. Try again, nothing. Close the lid, leaving the propane on, and decide to go inside to get a lighter. When I get back to the BBQ pit I figured I'd try pressing the ignite button one more time.... BOOM.

All the propane built up inside the pit. It burned the tips of some of my eyebrows and some of my hair. Could have been alot worse.

I was a teenager or real early twenties. A friend and I went drinking and came back to my parents house. We put pizza rolls in the oven and went to watch TV. Forgot about the pizza rolls until I looked into the kitchen and there was a smoke layer just hanging below the ceiling. Opened up the doors and windows to get the smoke out. The ceiling had soot all over it. It took us over 3 hours to clean it but it still had stains. My Mom noticed but didn't ask any questions.
