My God. I've seen threads on here talking about how bad he had become but I was still shocked. He couldn't remember his own phone number. He confused basically every restaurant or dish someone mentioned. That was painful.

It's sad to hear. If he's that bad, how does he keep this job?

WWL doesn’t care. They don’t have anybody else to fill the time on a Saturday cause Dan Gill plays bridge with the girls after brunch.

Tom is all we have.

I'm honestly not sure. I used to really enjoy listening to the show. Listening today was not like "haha, he's a terrible radio host." It really sounded like there is something wrong with him.

He must report up through Joe Alleva.

I imagine he buys the airtime, then sells his own commercials. WWL isn't going to care because they would otherwise just air some national sports shows.

I think it would have to be very bad for them to intervene.

Maybe he thinks that speaking incoherently is a prerequisite for landing a job at WWL.

Bring in a local chef each week to host the show with him.

He began one conversation with a caller remembering a restaurant, then forgetting what restaurant he himself was referring to in the second sentence. He called the Blue Tomato the Green Tomato, acted like he had never heard of it, then said he worked in the same building when it was a Time Saver.

Think he might be faking it?

That was the exact sequence I was listening too

I don't think so. When he is on point he sounds like he always has. He just seems to wander off into another realm with other callers like he is on the air for the first time.

My mother in law told me she was listening to him a while back and he was talking about putting lemon juice on steak and she wanted to try it. I remember thinking to myself that he might be mistaken as it doesn't sound right at all.

I was listening that day. I heard what he was saying. None of it was wrong. He was making sense. He was talking about what the acidity does with red meat when it hits your taste buds, and how good it is.

He may be losing it, but he’s still eating well. His brother is cool as hell, btw. Big ole baw.

My uncle always rubbed his pork ribs with lemon juice before seasoning them and let them sit in the fridge over night. He said the lemon just broke down the meat and tenderized in addition to allowing the seasoning to permeate. I have no idea if that's accurate, but I've also heard of rubbing other meats with lemon juice before.

Last week he tried to go to Gris Gris (where he has been multiple times and is pretty much a straight shot from downtown) but he couldn’t find it, so he had his daughter meet him at Houston’s instead. Not Delmonico, Coquette, Jack Rose, Mister John’s or any of the other good places nearby—but Houston’s. He provided a glowing review the next day.

This is quite sad to hear. I know many disliked him for his snobbishness, depending upon what you got into it with him over. But we have been reading his Menu since the 1970s and his writing was always cogent, engaging, taught you something and perhaps sent you to a good restaurant.

I have not listened to him in a couple years, now, and given this, I do not know if I could. Having an older parent is difficult enough without listening to a much younger man having this type of trouble.

If it weren't for his producers who get him back on track or feed him the words he is looking for, he would sound a lot worse. He forgets what he's talking about in the same sentence....or he contradicts himself within the same sentence. He is long past giving any new or relevant info on restaurants. I listen to get good info from callers, but he seldom has new callers, just the same crew. Todd Price is a good source of info.
