Im pretty sure there are some standards. I doubt I could walk into Chimes (if they were looking for a head chef) and apply for the job and my qualifications are that I write about food on the internet. I would imagine theyre gonna want to know where I trained and where I have been a chef

To me, it's also a bit disrespectful/disingenuous to call yourself a chef if you aren't really qualified. You see this sort of over-reach at times, esp in folks who are trying to promote their packaged stuff for sale. "Chef" Whoever's pasta sauce, or seasoning blend. Doesn't matter if "Chef" Whoever simply completed a 6-weeks training course and worked for Sonoco or Encore as an offshore catering cook for a few years. It sounds good for the marketing, so whatever.

Most serious food writers/bloggers do not appropriate the term/title "chef" unless they've received significant training or have run kitchens for a significant length of time. And many others who have done complete, multi year culinary studies but have never cooked professionally will decline to be called chef.

I like the term Cook. Anyone can be a cook. There are good cooks and bad cooks, home cooks and line cooks, casual cooks and serious cooks. Despite the fact that I own a small food business, I would never in a zillion years call myself a chef.

I certainly am not talking about a lot of the restaurants in NOLA that are well known but so many of them, smaller ones, I hear let me go get the Chef. just sayin

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm just not using the word the way those folks are. Chef means chief--sometimes, that's just the default ranking person who is heading the kitchen on any given night. Other times, it's a person involved in creating menus, making stuff from scratch, supervising all culinary aspects of the operation.

Other times, it's just a guy who wakes up one day and starts calling himself chef.

The American Culinary Federation actually has a certification program: LINK

FWIW, I frequently see the phrase "trained as a chef" in bios of people who are writers, product developers, etc but not actively working in kitchens.

he isnt a chef imo

A chef is a cook who manages a professional kitchen. So once he starts his restaurant and works there for a day, boom, he's a chef.

FYI, Julia Child didn't consider herself a chef for the above reason. She was a cook.

ETA: professional

I think he got started cooking at tailgates and just kept going with it. As far as I recall he has had no formal training. Just a guy who likes to cook and enjoys doing it.

Can't anyone who is the head of a kitchen call himself a chef? Not sure there are any standards. Kind of like owning a boat and calling yourself captain.

I make my kids call me that when I’m making their toast. Yes Chef. Butter please Chef.

So if someone starts a brewery, can they call themselves the brewmaster even if they had no formal training? Asking for a friend.

I like it too. I might start a GoFundMe page to buy a boat.

Does a rubber duck count?

You will have to check on what the standards are when you run a kitchen or plop a rig in the water.
