I saw Jay Ducote is going to be on another Food Network show and just curious as to what his background is, cooking wise. I know he has a taco restaurant that will be opening up, but all I can find online is that he cooked at tailgates and has a bbq sauce.

Well he does have a cooking background.

But he’s a younger, fatter and likes booze more, version of our Tom Fitzmorris.

The taco place was one of the first to announce for White Star Market, the market itself is taking way too long. I guess Ducote was their hire to make it relevant.

SMH

Jay Ducote spends most of his time as a food and beverage writer, blogger, radio host, speaker, video producer, culinary personality, chef and hugger. He finished runner-up on Season 11 of the hit reality competition show Food Network Star, and had a pilot for his show "Deep Fried America" air on the Travel Channel. The Bite and Booze Radio Show, produced and hosted by Ducote since 2011, won a Taste Award for best food or drink radio broadcast in the country and the Uniquely Louisiana Award from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. Jay has his own Jay D’s product line featuring his Louisiana Barbecue Sauce, Louisiana Molasses Mustard, Spicy & Sweet Barbecue Rub, Jay D's Blanc du Bois, a collaboration with West Monroe's Landry Vineyards, and Jay D's Single Origin Coffee. In early 2018 Jay will launch his first restaurant concept, Gov't Taco, inside White Star Market in Baton Rouge. Jay's mission is to share and expand on the conversation of Louisiana cuisine and to celebrate the culinary culture of communities he visits.

Is he trained as a chef or has ever been the head chef anywhere?

I dunno Jones, you just said his blog gave no detail to who he is so I helped you.

I can't imagine you know nothing about cooking and get as far as he did on that Food Network show.

I know a guy here in Portland who does exactly all of this stuff. He is one of the owners of Culmination Brewing (which is outstanding, btw), and hosts a radio show, does special events, tv shows, blog, etc...

It's a thing.

For someone claiming to be a chef, Id like to know how you got to where you are. I dont want to hear that you are a chef and was almost the next possible food network star because you blog(lol) about food in BR

If the guy has never had professional training as a chef and hasnt been a chef in a successful restaurant, he isnt a chef imo. If he has that, boom youre a chef

If he doesnt, he is as much of a chef as PJ is a meteorologist imo

I went to the store to try his mustard, bbq sauce and rub to use with the smoker until I realized it was $8 per bottle for fresh local ingredients. Don't need bbq sauce and rub costing more than the meat im buying.

Can't anyone who is the head of a kitchen call himself a chef? Not sure there are any standards. Kind of like owning a boat and calling yourself captain.

No patch on Jay Ducote, but I do agree about the (mis)use of the term chef. If you're a culinary school graduate who's helmed a kitchen, I'll call you chef. If you're not a culinary school graduate who's come up through the ranks, helmed a kitchen, created dishes from scratch or actually operated a restaurant kitchen on a daily basis, I'll call you a chef.

If you're a blogger who is media savvy & has products on grocery store shelves, I'll call you a food industry personality. Cook/writer, or product developer.

Chef is thrown around way too casually these days. It implies professional dedication, a certain level of training and expertise, and a broad, formal knowledge of food.
