It's not what it was when Harlan Sanders ran the show

Based on The History Channel food doc, he never really ran the show. He franchised his pressure frying method and seasoning blend to mom and pop places. He got a royalty of like 3 or 4 cents per piece of chicken sold. When it started to get popular, some city slicker businessmen bought it from him and paid him to be the Colonel. They are the ones who took it nationally and ran the business that we know.

And he had strict rules about how to cook the chicken.

I used to like their Original Recipe chicken and Cole Slaw, but that was 35 years ago. Like so many of these chains, their branding and marketing improved, while the quality of their food declined.

The only fast food chicken I visit are CFA, Popeyes and Cane's. Not Church's, not KFC.

It was good 20-50 years ago, better options now.

Yea, I grew up in the 70s and it was good. I have no idea what its like now since I went vegetarian in 1992.

I don’t think I’ve ever had KFC chicken. When they started with the pot pies, I tried one. The crust is outstanding. The inside is okay.

Ive never been to Arbys, Olive Garden, or Red Lobster.

Ive been to In and Out once, and it was the worst fast food place ive ever eaten at.

last I heard KFC isn't baked chicken

When I was training and racing I ate the shite out of their grilled chicken. It was good in a pinch and 0 carbs and kfcs are easy to find in TN.

When I was growing up in the 1970s nothing beat a family picnic with a bucket of original recipe KFC.

Nothing.

I made the "original recipe" chicken at home a year ago or so and it was delicious. Of course I used decent chicken.

quote:

11 spices — mix with 2 cups white flour

2/3 tablespoon salt

1/2 tablespoon thyme

1/2 tablespoon basil

1/3 tablespoon oregano

1 tablespoon celery salt

1 tablespoon black pepper

1 tablespoon dried mustard

4 tablespoons paprika

2 tablespoons garlic salt

1 tablespoon ground ginger

3 tablespoons white pepper

Original recipe chicken thighs from KFC should cost more than Wagyu beef.
Last time I went they did.

He sold it in 1972 for $2 million. He got $40 k a year after that to be the figurehead of the chain. The new owners removed almost all the 11 herbs and spices to cut costs. Now it's basically salt, pepper and MSG.

I don't think I ever had it before 1972. There is a spice company called Marion Kay that has a chicken seasoning mix called 99X that is supposed to be 99% close to the original recipe. Col. Sanders tasted it and said so.

KFC used to have a oven roasted chicken (not fried) option. I got it often. It was good. I don't know if they still offer it.

it's sad that some people consider Popeye's the be the be-all, end-all of fried chicken.
