Darrell’s in lake Charles

I was in Lake Charles last weekend and ate there based off a friend's suggestion. I did the surf and turf and thought it was fantastic.
So, now you need to clue me into the gas stations, because if they are better than that, I need to try them.

I looked them up on Yelp.
Never been, but they look pretty legit from my vantage.
Is this a South Louisana versus other parts of the state beef?

Was working around Tickfaw LA and one of the workers ran and got shrimp Poboys for everyone that wanted one.
I didn't get one but one of the guys gave me a piece to try. Always regretted I didn't get one that day.

It’s not necessarily a “traditional” poboy especially if you are looking for fried shrimp or debris roast beef. It’s like a really good deli style poboy, just different bread. I tear them up when in town. Actually I go to coolers down the road especially on $2 Tuesday.

Grilled shrimp with Jalepeno mayo fully dressed is on par with any place not in New Orleans.

Don't sleep on the bbq beef. I usually get that and put a layer of jalapeno chips on it. Fantastic.

Which poboy did you get? If it's not the special or surf and turf, then you ordered the wrong thing. If you had the special and are posting this thread, show us on the doll where Darrell touched you.

They need to start offering french fries and fried shrimp. Surf and turf with fried shrimp would be incredible.

the special
What does this consist of again? I'll be in LC next week and may hop in.

It's basically a roast beef poboy but add ham, turkey, lettuce, mustard, and you absolutely must get the jalapeno mayo.

I always get the Darrell Special with Salt & Vinegar chips and extra napkins

Truth.
I’m sorry, but I’m just not a big fan of Darrell’s. I’ve tried to like it, and it’s not horrible by any means, but there’s better poboys readily available.
If I’m in Jennings and want a poboy, I’m opting for Bourbon Street Deli at the Shop Rite or driving an extra 10 minutes down to C’est Bon in Mermentau.

Since it appears Gov Landrys plan is to turn LSU into McNeese East, can he at least force someone to open a Darrell's in BR ? .. should be fairly easy to pull off at this point

Oh ok. That sounds like the Ferdie...or Fergie...I had at another poboy shop I visited in Laplace. It was massive. And delicious. I just try to avoid 2500 calorie meals anymore.

The Darrell's hate has always been amusing. To me, an occasional passer thru LC, it's a good, convenient sandwich shop that has a pretty good beer selection. I think the special, surf and turf, and shrimp poboys are all fine sandwiches. I don't mind the fact that they don't fry anything and don't mind a bag of chips with a sandwich. Nothing about the place is mind blowing but I don't think it's supposed to be. It's like Johnny's pizza, locals love it so others feel they should overtly hate it rather than liking it, or even being indifferent to it.
