Portillo's Italian Beef

I have family in Chicago and always enjoy going to grab a sandwich from there. Might give this a shot.

I like mine topped with spicy giardiniera though.

Just ordered it as is on the menu. Didn't know there is some special way to order it.

You gotta absolutely load it with giardiniera and get it dipped. I think its pretty good for what it is. I like mine with sausage also.

ETA most of the chicago places will ship you frozen italian beef, very easy to heat up and serve.

Portillos was shipping whole kits of their Italian beef and hot dogs during the start of the shutdown. All ingredients included. Not sure if they still are.

Had the dogs and they turned out very good.

ETA: Portillos ships

I recommend trying Johnnie's Beef next time you are in Chicago. This was delicious!

Yep. For anyone that is truly desperate for the beef I standby the quality of the kits. IMO you will not notice a difference. Grill up some italian sausage and make yourself a nice combo. They go great at parties.

If looking to order online, I highly recommend going with Bari Beef and saving quite a bit of cash over Portillo's.

Maybe I am just too new to the Midwest but I was underwhelmed by their sandwich. It's good that it comes from a fast food drive through window but I don't get all the hype.

Don't say that in public around here.

Apparently I didn't order it right, but was just my impression of what I did have. Like I said, I'll definitely go again, and order correctly this time. My impression of the first time was that I'd rather a Nola roast beef, philly cheesesteak, prime rib sandwich or a french dip.

I will report back sometime after ordering the sandwich correctly.

Update: Last night I got the Portillo's Italian Beef wet with peppers. It was absolutely better. I did forget to add cheese, which I would imagine will make it even better.

As far as fast food joints go, best sandwich I've had. There are still other beef sandwiches I like more. It's great for a quick bite though.

I see where Portillo's now has an Italian Beef Bowl. Looks pretty good to me. I understand you can get it topped with cheese, which would appeal to me.

Keto for me so bread is not an option. Always happy when I see a keto offering from any fast food place.

Planning on doing italian beef this week. I don't have a meat slicer (yet), so I'll be attempting to slice it by hand with a sharp knife.

For the bread, what would ya'll recommend that I can get in the hammond area? I'm having trouble telling what the bread is like from the videos. Is it a hard roll?

some sort of smallish Italian or French loaf, maybe 3 inch diameter. You might hollow it out a little. Be sure to flood it with juice or dip it.

If you're slicing this way I'd recommend cooking your beef a day earlier and leave it in the fridge/freezer to firm up before slicing.

That's the hard thing to source in our area. It's a high gluten bread so it holds together with all the juice without falling apart. If you have a cheesesteak place in the area they may sell you some Amorosa bread that is similar. I've used Leidenheimer in a pinch but it tends to fall apart pretty quick.

Hot giardiniera would for a different sandwich than without. It's good, but be prepared to sweat.

They use a soft roll that is high in gluten so it doesn't fall apart.
