Unsealed burners can have higher BTU output because of the greater airflow (from beneath & around). An unsealed burner arrangement will have a drip tray several inches below the burners; the drip tray usually pulls out from the front. Imagine a pot boiling over: on unsealed burners, this will drip down to the gas jet then fall beneath it, down to the drip tray.

Sealed burners are solid-bottom. You can take off the grates and perhaps a shield around the burner, but the "bottom" of the cooktop is attached to the burner, ie, there is no space between the burner and the cooktop bottom. The vast majority of stoves & cooktops are sealed burner.

I find my unsealed burners easier to clean than a sealed burner stove. All the schmutz falls through; I line the drip tray w/foil and simply change the foil when it gets filthy. The burners & grates are cast iron, so they're supposed to season & darken. No need to polish the damn thing of every single speck of grease. When the parts get really grungy, a wire brush and some Comet fix 'em right up.

you have the bluestar correct?

i'm hung up on the dang grill feature of gris' kitchenaid now. i love the idea of searing some steaks over gas indoors (assuming the hood venting is correct)

i probably shouldn't get too attached to one single feature.

i like the idea of a drip tray pulling out. the current GE we have i have to pull the grates off and wipe around the burners. it never really gets completely clean..always a thin film of grease even if we try to go back over it with windex or 409 to 'polish' it.

Mine are sealed and I like that so much better than the unsealed I had. It's easy to clean. I haven't had any issues and I've done plenty of messy cooking on it.

I can't begin to tell you how much I've enjoyed that gas grill. It was one of the features, I was determined to have and it has served the purpose well. I do steaks, burgers, fish on the half shell, grilled veggies, sausage and other things on it. When I need to do something quickly and don't care to deal with heat outside in August or charcoal, it answers the bell. My hood sucks up everything great. I have to turn off the kitchen ceiling fan, though, so it doesn't move the smoke around, but otherwise, it all goes straight up. Same with steam from big pots of gumbo and the like.

BUT, don't get it unless it's important to you and you know you're going to use it. I knew for a fact I'd use it frequently and I probably average once a week, at least.

I do fish on the half shell flesh down first because I like to make sure to get some grilled flavor on the flesh and I brush them in a seasoned butter mixture first, so there's smoke a fire for a minute. No smoke in my kitchen, though, and these fish were cooked just right, moist, no dry spots even on the thinner parts. I turned the heat down after I got the flesh side nice for about a minute or so.

i use my outdoor propane grill 3+ times a week now. i grill everything

so if this keeps me inside when its 18 degrees or raining, i will use it.

still having a hard time with paying nearly $3k for that feature though

why cant i find a $1500 range with a grill?

i might have to give up the front knobs to get the grill and thats ok with me if so.

i promised my wife with a 5K budget I could bring home a washer, dryer, fridge & range + hood.

in my head i've broken it down like this:

fridge $2k
washerdryer $1k
range $1500
hood $500

we'll see if i can pull this off. would hate to sacrifice having a fridge to get a grill but ima do it!

What in the hell were you thinking?!! making a promise like that before pricing what you want?

I can speak only for myself in that my stovetop and hood have been one of the best investments I've made. It has increased my enjoyment in cooking as well as added a GREAT convenience.

You need to promise her something else. I don't know about getting a decent hood for $500 and with or without a grill, a decent hood is a big deal to me. I already had a pretty strong one, but not strong enough for the grill. My neighbors seem to know more times than not what I'm cooking.

i cant find anyone local that handles them anyway.

its interesting i can buy a WOLF cooktop (not rangetop) for around $1500.

all things being equal, i might be choosing between the following:

Option 1 WOLF
$1800 retail ($1500ish on sale:)

Its a WOLF! ..but only 4 burners and no grill

Option 2 HYPOTHEORY
$1300 but includes 6 burners plus is a rangetop..but no grill

Option 3 GRIS GRIS GRILL
$2600ish on sale but no compromises..budget out the window

Gris,
How difficult is the KitchenAid to clean? Everyday burners and grill?

The grill takes more time to clean, but even it isn't a big deal. I really haven't found it to be easier than my old stovetop with the unsealed burners. I just wipe it. Things come off very easily.

Option 2 looks okay. Not for me, though. What about the burners? Do you have a warmer burner? Do you have the one high powered burner? Will all or some of them do the low simmer? Those items were also important in my decision making. My old one on simmer would boil and not low simmer. Pain in the arse. I wanted more control for a gas stovetop.

You have to decide what you want based on your style of cooking and desired style of cooking and then determine what's worth the money to you. I assume you plan to live in whatever new house you buy a very long time. I wasn't just buying a stovetop. I was paying for entertainment, as well. I looked at it from various angles when I decided to spend the green I spent and it was so very worth it to me. I'd have given up other things if I'd had to in order to get what I wanted because cooking is more important to me. Thing about those green fungissy aged steaks on that grill!

WE GOT THE HOUSE!!!

ok, now i gotta sort this out and i'll be damned if i'm not more confused than ever.

GE = i am familiar and it has lots of features and good for simmer to a boil

HYPOTHEORY = ??? i dont know anything about it. i'm scared.

KITCHENAID = grill..worth another $1400 for that feature?

WOLF = cool unit around $1500..but its a cooktop and only 4 burners but dat heat control (and red knobs)

:way:

i has a sad.

Congrats!!! Now, you have some work to do and decisions to make.

The grill is worth the extra to me, but YOU have to decide that.

If you don't get it, post here next time you grill in the rain or the cold.

I don't recall the particulars. Have no idea where the booklet is, but it's strong and it's what the contractor recommended to go with the stovetop. It's a kitchen aid also.

The one below looks like mine except you only see the hood, not the top part that's exposed. The top of the slanted part is up against the wall. I believe mine is the strongest that was available. You can probably find it cheaper through another site.

I'm glad. I laughed when I wrote it. I may just come to resort so you can cook green steaks for me while I lounge around the pool and read in the gazebo.

How long have you had that hypotheory? Any problems?

At 1/2 the price of comparable rangetops this seems like a no brainer at $1400.

I give up the grill but outside of the kitchenaid Gris has very few seem to offer that feature.

Gris what do you think of this form? 6 burners, even surface and knobs on the front.

Since July, no problems.

Yes, it is half the price of the others, so I took a chance. So far, so good. No electronics in it to break, cast iron grates, sealed burners, easy to clean.

I wanted the Blue Star, but I took this to be cheap. So far, I am more than happy.

THAT SAID,

This is my first gas range. I previously has a jenn aire flat top electric with the downdraft. I hated that thing. I dreamed of a gas cooktop. I coveted it.

Now that I have one, I really like the power, the instant control, and I like that it works when the power goes out. It's warm on the cook though. If you are stirring a pot, you are wiping your brow.

I really want to see what the induction ranges cook like. No one I know has one. They are supposed to be powerful without the radiant heat.
