It just sort of depends on the overall situation. If the restaurant doesn't have anything that appeals to me at the time, I would probably not stay.

If they tell me the wait is 30 minutes or more, I am leaving.

Eating out is expensive. If I don't see some sort of value for my dining dollar I will not go back. Like you we have walked out before ordering before. In those cases I looked at the wife and said, I'm sorry. I can't eat here and she said, OK by me. And we left. If I had no service I left no tip.

I agree with Degas on the TV thing, when I moved here in the late 80's I noticed it right away, it seemed every restaurant, even white tablecloth nice places, had a TV blaring. This was not a thing in the NO area. We used to love the food at Cipriani's, but damn all the TV's.
Asian restaurants with pictures of the dishes on the wall, bad sign. Restaurants with farm implements hung on the ceiling and walls, bad sign. Restaurant with grumpy old men or women as servers instead of perky college kids, great sign, I'm gonna love this place.

It depends on the negative. I can deal with little negatives like ambiance issues or maybe limited entree' choices but I draw the line at poor service and food that simply isn't good.

Bad attitude, rudeness and well, an incomplete sandwich.
I haven't for some time and will never again go to Parran's! I was never relly fond of the place but one day for lunch I wanted an oyster poboy so I stopped in at Parran's and ordered on to go. The order taker/cashier was the rudist bitch! Had to be the owner's mother as he stood right next to her as she spoke to people like dirt. I get to the office and sit down to eat and I open the bread to add hot sauce. This was a large fried oyster poboy and it had exactly eleven oysters on it. You could see bread between the oysters. It actually would not have made a half of that sandwich. I called to complain and get an attitude from whoever it was if it was the owner/manager basically telling me I was wrong. Never went back and will never go again. If they closed forever it wouldn't bother me at all.

CASH ONLY. Literally turns me away because I don't always carry cash.
No salt on the table. IMO it's very authoritarian to give message "you're going to eat this EXACTLY how I seasoned it." These are places I find that usually need some more salt.
While not a "negative," I don't stay when wait is +15 minutes in New Orleans. Exception is Friday seafood during Lent.
Other minor things that don't actually turn me away: Pepsi on the menu, more expensive "imported" beers like Corona and Heineken, paper menus for everyday stuff, ever hearing chef addressed as chef like "yes, chef" or "I'm sorry, chef."
