Had my cast iron dutch oven sitting on the back burner of the stove. Accidentally turned on the back burner instead of the front and didn't notice until the the pot started smoking and now there's a burned smell/flavor that I can't get out of it. What's the best way to get rid of that burnt smell/flavor?

Wash it with Dawn and re-season

Yep, short of being cracked, you can almost always fix it.
You burned the seasoning off, and perhaps whatever residue from previous cooking remained. Scrub like crazy w/steel wool....if needed, use a wire brush to scrape off any thick carbonized patches. Yes, you’re scraping off the seasoning, but you don’t want big hunks flaking off into your food. Wash, rinse, dry well, then re-season.

What's the preferred method for reseasoning?

Build a fire and bury it in the coals and let it burn off. Clean and start cooking bacon and fried chicken. You can eat while you season.

If it’s really bad off and you end up needing to strip it, you can always spray it with oven cleaner, put it in a garbage bag overnight, then clean it off. You may have to repeat if everything isn’t removed. Will get you back down to the bare iron. Then re-season.

Wear rubber gloves and goggles when you spray that shite.

Two things
Do not build a fire and use it to strip cast iron. If it is Lodge or BSR it may be ok but you run a risk of warping the piece.

Also, do not use steel wool. it can get in the cast iron. Stainless steel wool should be used.

If SS wool does not work then GeauxldMember is correct. Oven cleaner is the next best way to get back to bare iron.

As far as re seasoning, keep it simple. There are a lot of ways that work fine. do a search and pick one. I would suggest using Crisco shortening. It is cheap and has worked for generations.

One of my many hobbies is finding, striping and restoring cast iron cookware.

How long you talking about?

Whenever I dry my black iron, I put it on the burner and turn it on, when it starts smoking I spray it with a little cooking spray and wipe it down with a paper towel. Let it cool on the stove and it's ready for the next go round.
