I went down a YouTube rabbit hole on vending machines in Japan

Man, do I want to go to Japan and do this. You can buy A5 Wagyu beef out of vending machines. They have machines that serve full, large bowls of hot ramen, even hot hamburgers.

Some restaurants have started placing vending machines outside of the shop so you can buy their dishes to-go and warm them up at home, even after the restaurant closes for the day. The food stays fresh because they are being directly refilled every day. I've even seen a few of these in more suburban areas.
Another thing that some places do is have a small 24-hour shop space with indoor machines that look like coolers or mini deep freezers that you can buy frozen foods to take home.
And there are similar small shops with little lockers that take however many yen to open where local farmers or gardeners can sell their fresh produce. In the more rural areas, sometimes the veggies are just in bags on a table and you put your coins in a box on the table via the honor system.
The convenience is definitely something I'm going to miss when I move back to the States.

They have been more advanced than us on vending machines for a long time. I saw a 60 Minutes piece back in the early cell phone days (Nokia) where the Japanese could operate a vending machine and pay with their phone. It was almost unbelievable at that time.

Yes, one of the videos I watched had these. It was a steak house, and the vending machine had A5 Wagyu beef for about $27 a pound ($9 for 1/3 lb steak). Granted it’s raw and no sides, and you got to cook it yourself some how. But there was a bamboo and cardboard disposable grill.
I liked the mystery gourmet vending machines (looked like they were in a train station). For about $40, you get an entire meal. The guy got two 6” slabs of A5 short ribs and all the sides.

Cool idea and technology, but I don’t see myself wanting a meal from a vending machine. Is this supposed to be a good thing?

If I’m hungry and looking for something convenient, hot, and tasty, then yes, it’s a good idea.

And if you work or are traveling until after 10pm but the restaurants near you close at 8, you can still have one of the meals from that restaurant if you want. Some of the vending machine foods (like the machines with burgers or hot sandwiches) are average quality, but some of them are high quality foods. It's not like you're buying a microwavable TV dinner.

Last time i flew out of Austin i noticed they had a Jo’s coffee vending machine complete with snacks and sandwiches similar but not quite as elaborate as these. Plenty of people were in line so it must’ve been legit.

Reminds me of the time I went down a YT rabbit hole about Automats
Fascinating the way our eating habits have evolved (not for the better) in this country
