Oh I'm sure that has a lot to do with many folks' interest in and sometimes obsession with food, restaurants, new cuisines, local dives, etc.

I actually have very few friends who are really into different and/or high quality food and drink. Which is why often times I experience new places alone.

Might it also have a lot to do with what circles you hang out in, your friends, etc? With everyone I am friends with it would seem the subject at some point goes to food, whether in a very general discussion or in eating out, techniques, or whatever. I honestly don't have a single close friend that is not into food, or should I say Likes to Eat Really Good Food.

Agreed.

Local restaurants and who has the best food is generally not something that comes up a lot in my circle of friends. It's usually us sitting on a couch, playing video games or something and one of us says "hey, im hungry.. lets get something to eat".. and we think "what's close, fairly cheap, and decent". Went to Louie's the other day, sometimes we go to Kaminari or other places around campus. My apartment is at Jefferson/Bluebonnet, but I go to campus frequently since most of my friends live on or around campus. Basically what I'm getting at is that most people don't talk about food all the time or restaurants and such. Nothing wrong with doing so if that's your thing, but it's just not what the majority of people do.

and I realize I don't belong on the food board outside of the puttada thread, but I wanted to throw out a reminder for you foodies that not everybody thinks of food/restaurants all of the time or cares enough to go out of their way to find obscure/local places.

Pinetta's
<<<learn this. Perfect for a date on a budget and the red sauce is better than olive garden. Probably cheaper also. I used to know a cook there and my best friend was friends with the previous owner so it has a sweet spot in my heart even though not everyone loves it's dusty hole in the wall shotgun in NOLA atmosphere.

You're in college. It's understandable.

But once someone becomes an adult, shouldn't they at least attempt to get to know the town that they have settled in? Shouldn't they at least try to help that town improve? Shouldn't they try to help local establishments as much as possible? Why wouldn't someone want to improve the community by helping make it unique?

Ever go down Jefferson to Tramonte's or Mason's? I know you have to deal with Airline which is a bitch, but they have two of the best burgers in town. I don't go out to that side of town too often but I know those places. And Pimanyoli's down Airline is pretty awesome.

so it's wrong to care about the uniqueness and creativity of local restaurants as opposed to local places that give towns some character? sorry if not all of us are okay with the new American landscape. big box stores, chains and overall poor-quality, boring food and atmosphere. should I apologize to you that I find no redeeming qualities in having thousands of the exact same retail strip malls/restaurant blocks across the entire country that saps the soul out of our culture?

damn, Rohan .. did you even read the OP and what my reply related to ??? your diatribe there is from another world compared to what I was talking about ...

I've read the entire thread. From your post I inferred that you were of the mindset that it shouldn't matter or be anyone's business where and what other people like to eat. I took issue with that mentality, as I believe we should care about the direction American food culture takes.

the funny thing is that the very people chastising those that eat at chains for not supporting local places are the same people that will then turn around and buy their paint, flooring, lumber, and hardware from home depot .. their furniture from rooms to go, and their appliances from best buy ...

No doubt there exists such hypocrites.

I, for one, buy almost everything from local businesses.

Except for cigarettes. The cheaper the better.

So because you eat at a well priced restaurant with pretty good food, you are a sheep?

That's fricking dumb.

ETA: and no my food experiences don't consist of olive garden and applebees just throwing that out there.

A lot of these people, if they ate the exact same food at an unfamiliar, local restaurant they had never heard of that wasn't in a convenient location such as a strip mall on the busiest street in town.. they wouldn't go back a second time.

ETA: or perhaps they would, because many folks have terrible palates.

I can see where he's coming from, although more from a craft beer perspective. If more people tried drinking craft beers instead of BMC then it would be supporting smaller businesses (sometimes local) and also increase the demand for craft beer and provide those brewers more resources to make more better beer.

Fortunately there is enough market out there for "good" beer that brewers for the most part have the resources if they put out a good product, but the more the merrier.

I'd rather see the number of Louisiana breweries grow rather than stagnate so long as they put out good products. Same can be said for local restaurants.

Its just a product of how these people were raised. They're excited because to them olive garden is a nice sit down meal.

And I agree it is frustrating if you reccomend a similar style restaurant and they turn it down completely because they're not familiar, o yes I know the type
