I have one thought to throw out here, and probably has been discussed already.

Personally I'd rather eat at the local places and not the chains. Supporting local business, stimulating economical growth, etc., all that good shite.

The problem is, even though I've been in BR for 2 and a half years now, I don't know many local places. Is it just because it's BR and chains have really taken over the city? I don't see advertising for these local places and if I don't hear about them, how am I supposed to know to go to them? Word of mouth is great and all, but some of these places need to advertise.

Perhaps you have an IQ problem? It's not that difficult to find local places in BR.

No.

I don't know...sounds like an impossible feat. Maybe if we had something like a Food and Drink Board here where we could discuss BR restaurants then it wouldn't be so difficult. Oh wait...

TBH I don't eat out anymore all that much anymore since I've been dieting. But I need to remember TD.com next time I want to go out to eat. When I'm home I don't get on TD much and it slips my mind. Pardon me for not considering TD?

Nah. You know that. It does irk me how you're so quick to call people dumb or stupid though.

you could make this case for the majority of steak houses too .. in most cases you can buy your own cuts of meat and grill them at home every bit as good as most of them do ..

not many people are learned enough to pull that off. and your point is much more applicable to a place like Applebee's where the steak they serve is a cheap piece of shite cut of meat. there's a reason big box chain restaurants draw people in.. cheap prices. it's just too many people are fooled into thinking they are getting a quality product, when in fact they are eating very subpar fare. I promise you Olive Garden isn't minimizing their profits. they're using shite products.

I've met quite a few people who claim that their steak at home is just as good as ___ 4 star steakhouse. And it never is.

Sorry but most people just don't have the superior commercial grade equipment to pull it off.

why are they stupid for eating there? You ever eaten there, or just saw the TV show?

its not bad at all. Prob the best place in the Quarter for sit-down casual seafood, especially if you have a big party.

Yeah I hear that occasionally too, and I don't order a steak out very often, due to the ease of me being able to do it at home and still turning out a very good product.

I try to recreate certain dishes at home and I have to spend more than it would cost to order two at a restaurant and have half of the ingredients go bad. When I have to start cooking for more than two, it becomes more economical to eat at home.

I have no problem with sheeple eating at applebees, olive garden and red lobster. Since I never eat there it keeps them out of my way. Hulkkster- BR/NOLA local places do not need to advertise because their tables are always full by locals who are in the know. All advertising would do is make the wait jump up to several hours.

That and most people get ripped in the store. Last I checked RC gets their steaks from Redi Portion, or at least the one here does if not just on ocassion. In any case, they do sell to the public although they don't advertise it. You will just have to buy it in cases if memory serves me and you will have to specify quality as usual. Another place to hit up if you can get the hookup to go is Restaurant Depot in NOLA. Buy a roast and age it. About the best you can pull off at home.

Just read through a thread or two here about BR Lunch spots or something like that.

Or get UrbanSpoon for your phone and find something close to you. You can tell if it's a chain or not.

There are many many many local options in BR, from nicer restaurants to convenience stores that happen to do good food (like AM Mart) or normal casual places like Sammy's.

I don't understand it either. And yes, you are going to get called a food snob and be called bad names by some on here, but you are correct about these places and those who dine almost exclusively there.

The same can be said about music too. I'd probably be considered a music snob in the same way many here are looked at as food snobs. I simply don't "get" the love and obsession and the complete takeover of autotuned rap and hip hop of modern pop music. Most threads on the OT for example talking about the greatest eras of music or the best artists of the last 30 years are dominated by Kanye, Little Wayne, and other untalented garbage like that.

One of my best friends has the nickname DN (for dinner nazi) so believe me we do not eat at chain restaurants (except a few local ones). You give me a type of cuisine you want and I will give you options to try.

eta: most of the time it is no more expensive either. You can pick any price point and Sammy's will dominate Red Lobster any day of the week. From the cheapest thing to the most expensive thing on both menus.

Please tell me what is special about their sandwiches. I just don't get it. I mean I realize it's cheap, you get a lot of food for the money, and it appeals to the broke college students around Tigerland, but I have never understood what it was about their food that made everyone go goofy over it.

I just used AM Mart as an example, I think it's overrated because like you I don't see anything special. However, it's still an example of a local convenience store-type place that people around here tend to love.

No, I think I sound like the average person who is not a foodie. Most people don't put a lot of thought into it.

I am also learning more about NOLA now that my daughter and one of my friends live there. I am so excited to get into the local food scene in NOLA. Everything is so good.
