Last I checked RC gets their steaks from Redi Portion, or at least the one here does if not just on ocassion.

I know this was true in BR 20 years ago.

You know who in Baton Rouge was getting their steaks from the same purveyor (at least at the time)?

Waffle House.

I just used AM Mart as an example, I think it's overrated because like you I don't see anything special. However, it's still an example of a local convenience store-type place that people around here tend to love.

Gotcha... I've just always wondered what it was that fueled all that fawning over AM Mart.

In all honesty, I can't find a better sandwich place here than Anthony's, although to be quite honest, if Baton Rouge ever swung a place like Cochon Butcher it would be game set match. I had a braised pork belly sandwich there a couple of weeks ago with fresh aioli and house made sourdough that made me have to change my pants.

oh quit that. He has a point. You know very well that small mom and pop sandwich type places don't advertise much. And when they do, it is more often than not only in a church bulletin or yellow pages.

get in the car and drive around. stop anywhere you think looks interesting and at least look at a menu. how hard is that?

of course, a lot of people are too unimaginative to venture away from College Dr./Perkins/Highland.

He has lived there for 2 years

At some point you have to almost stumble into some of the local places if you eat out at all

You mean places like Gino's, Chelsea's, Pinetta's, DiGiullio Bros. and Parrain's?

I'm sure he already knows about those places. And if he doesn't, shame on him.

We had a similar discussion last week about the mom and pops here in Laffy. Most of them are gone, or are going... Once gone, it leaves only the chains. Not much choice then.

Yes, I could and should come here for advice. You're right. I'll admit that I should've thought of that.

But let's look at this from another point of view. Someone who doesn't even know what TD.com is. The average person that does not care enough about eating out at mom and pop places to go drive around town and discover them on their own.. How are they supposed to know about these places? IDK about you guys but when I drive, I don't pay attention to stores around me and such unless I'm looking for something specific.

These local places just don't stick out, they don't advertise much, whereas the chains spend tons of money to be on TV all of the time. You get hungry, you don't want to cook, so you think "I want to eat out". Now, the foodies on this board will probably think of the best local place to go to get their desired food. The average person, though, will probably think, "what's the easiest place to get decent food from?" And then they think about all of the places they know of. What do you think they know of? More than likely not many more places other than chains or maybe one or two places they heard by word of mouth.

The only places I know out of those is Chelsea's and Parrain's.

One would hope he knows about them... but I wouldn't bet on it.

I also have no idea where he lives in town.

I wouldn't even consider those the best examples either

You could probably list 20 more without much effort

Ask friends/co-workers. Especially if they want to make an effort to try local places.

I actually do the opposite and try to soak in as much around me as possible. Probably too much and I should pay more attention to the road.

Probably the most well-known examples in the Perkins/College stretch. I could easily go on, but I live in this area.

Right. I'm just commenting that even if you took all of those out of the equation there are still quite a few that I could name off the top of my head that are solid local options.

Word of mouth. The newspaper and other local publications. Happenstance.

It is true that a lot of people simply don't care about eating good food; they eat because they have to in order to live. I have nothing in common with these folks, but I get why they think Chili's is good food and a "fun night out." And it has lot to do with marketing and laziness. And, to be fair, lack of interest and motivation to eat better food.

Pinetta's and DiGiullio Bros. are both on Perkins between Chelsea's and Parrain's. Pinetta's is a European restaurant, mostly Italian but also some German and other European cuisine. DiGuillio Bros. is Italian as well, very good food and always packed at lunch.

Gino's is off of College (on Bennington) behind that new Chick-Fil-A... another good Italian place.

Might it also have a lot to do with what circles you hang out in, your friends, etc? With everyone I am friends with it would seem the subject at some point goes to food, whether in a very general discussion or in eating out, techniques, or whatever. I honestly don't have a single close friend that is not into food, or should I say Likes to Eat Really Good Food.
