I'm not a food snob. I don't go to high-end restaurants every weekend, and spend $100 per meal whenever I go out to eat. In New Orleans, you don't have to. But I truly feel sorry for people who's idea of going out to eat consits of Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Applebee's, etc.
I see it all the time on my Facebook feed. It'll be a Saturday night, and so-and-so "Is SOO excited for my dinner date with my man tonight....Can't wait for OLIVE GARDEN!!"
I can understand maybe on a regualr weeknight, when you want to jsut go get something quick. Wait, no I can't, because there are tons of places around that you can go get a good, cheap meal that are better than those places. I guess maybe they are just in a location that is not conducive to getting a good meal?

That or they just don't care enough about good food to look around a little. That well lit main street place is just too easy for them to pass up. They might have to go a half mile out of their way to find something else.
I don't understand it either. And yes, you are going to get called a food snob and be called bad names by some on here, but you are correct about these places and those who dine almost exclusively there.

People are scared to try something they dont know.

I know a few people who love to eat out at those horrible chain restuarants even in a city like Austin where there's good food (but nowhere as good as Nola).
What's the worst is that they won't touch anything else that's foreign to them. This can be anything from a Muffaletta to Chinese food.
To each his own I guess.

This is mostly it
Olive Garden is familiar. It's on the TV all the time, with happy people, smiling and enjoying themselves.
And for some reason, chicks just fricking love Olive Garden.

welcome to modern culture brah. have you seen what movies pack the theaters? or what music tops the charts? or what constitutes "coffee" these days?
people are sheep. and many of them have no taste or desire to expand their boundaries. close-mindedness, conformity.. there are a lot of factors that work toward accurately portraying why the restaurants you listed are popular; as well as the current state of the economy - but, as you stated.. that's a poor excuse and likely one used to cover up laziness or lack of imagination.
BUT.. that being said, there is a welcome group of folks at the grassroots level that continue to push and grow the "eat local" agenda; which has produced a lot of great new markets, products, restaurants, and such. although, that could end up becoming just another "organic" blip on the proverbial food radar. which would be unfortunate.

Red Lobster is also in this category.

When I was in Rock Springs, WY, I met people that would drive to Salt Lake City to go to Olive Garden
Now THAT I feel sorry for

Red lobster has some of it's highest volume restaurants on the Florida coast. Their prices for fresh fish of the day are just as much as local places.

When I am at the beach and go by Red Lobster it is always packed. I have often wondered who in the hell goes to Red Lobster when they are on vacation at the beach. Do they have fresh seafood? I always assumed that all of the chains got their frozen food from the same distributor.

I don't know but Outback has pledged to use Louisiana shrimp in their Louisiana stores.

I just checked some feeds of some "facebook friends" that I'd assume would be biggest offenders and saw this gem:

All right, I'm always looking for neighborhood and best-kept-secret places to eat.
I agree that a lot of chains blow (applebees, etc.).
But I really enjoy Darden restaurants.
A balance can be reached between the mainstream and the obscure.
