No way. What’s the explanation since I’m not on FB?

I might be blind, but see no explanation, just a good bye post.

There is a post from late November about rumors and troubles. I'm guessing that it's as simple as business tanking somewhere along the way and they couldn't find a buyer to get out (or maybe didn't want to), so they decided to close the doors. The closed bridge cutting off all those customers on the other side of the river for the last few months couldn't have helped business, either.

Food is shite and it's a roach infested dump. It was OK when it was the only fry house in town but c'mon, there's one on every corner now. And I get the nostalgia as I grew up going there.

Ok. I just heard that possibly a near by plant bought them out for the land, but I'm not familiar with the area and that could just be talk. You know how them Ascension folks are.

The only time I ate there, within the last8~10 years, I could smell the gas pumps outside from the inside. Nothing special about the food, but the small beer glasses like my dad used to get when he went to bars (50 years ago) when I went to the bar and not sat in the car (sometimes for hours) was pretty nostalgic, in a self demeaning way.... frick you dad, I hope you rot in Hell... :)
Not really. There is no Hell, and, if there was, I wouldn't want him to rot in it. Still, i miss the chance that I never got to kick him in the nuts... but, again, I digress, and I shouldn't drink and post...

I remember those little beer glasses too, but I never sat in the car. Where I grew up, kids sat at the bar w grownups, eating Lance’s cheez nips, spicy Slim Jims, and drinking Barq’s. If the convos got too spicy, they just switched to French. Sorry your pops liked beer better than you, it’s (not) funny how long those hurts can last.

ETA, many years ago, my dad sold crabs to the old man Hymel. He used to drive to Leeville on the regular for all of his seafoood. He and his wife were super nice.

I for one am kinda pissed off that a set date wasn’t made for closing. But that’s the kinda crap marketing that killed the old school place to begin with. I saw the bad business posts recently begging people to come in, but had they told me they were shutting down on a specific date I would’ve 100% gone there one last time and I’m sure I’m not alone.

This was the last nostalgic restaurant around for me. No more LaFonda’s and no more Hymel’s. Sad day.

Interesting story but the gas pumps have been out of service for 30 plus years.

Based on all the complaints on here, sounds more like it’s closing for bad.

I thought the fried shrimp were good and whoever the older guy behind the bar was the time I ate there was kind of an arse.
And screw and old school institution like that for switching to asian catfish.

Way overrated and I’m not upset. Neighbors swear we had to try it....after a 40 minute drive I wanted to kill them after that waste of money

A lot of average on the menu, with a few shining stars such as a fried dozen jumbo shrimp (but for some reason the regular fried shrimp were just okay), boiled seafood was always on point, stuffed flounder was great when they had it. Just part of a by gone era of fry house/bar type place that always had crackers and butter on the table

Exactly. They did a few things right. I loved the fried jumbo shrimp and was always my go to order with a big fishbowl of beer.

James, the arse hat behind the bar and the owner, was definitely a turn off to me. It took that guy decades to figure out customers would like bathrooms that were cleaner than than a 7-11 store in Tijuana. They were disgusting to say the least for decades until just recently. A couple of times he told me in the bar they had no draft beer when in fact they have draft beer. Its just in the back bar and he's too lazy or was too lazy to get what a customer wanted. He was part of the demise and the fact that they turned to Asian fish and abandoned US grown catfish to save money. Still though i'll miss the old place.
