So picked up a Haydel's Apple "Hubig replacement" yesterday at Rouses. I must say, they are damn close on the crust, but the filling is different. Not bad, but no apple chunks and darker in color, perhaps more spices. At the end of the day, it was a pretty good fix for not having a Hubig for several years. Sure do miss them heading to the boat landing on a fishing trip...

The closest thing I have come to a Hubig Pie is the Hostess brand. I have not seen these in years. The new make believe Hubig by Haydel’s is good but it’s no Hubig Pie.

It's been 13 years. I hate to say this, but it might be time.

ETA: 6 years. For some reason, I forgot they reopened after the Katrina damage and it was a fire that shut them down the last time.

hayfels are baked, hubigs were fried...that a huge difference. i will eat the haydels pies (because its an apple pie, and apple pies are good) but the crust is nothing like a hubigs

As popular as Hubig's were, did they close for a reason besides decreased sales? (I cant think of another reason to close a profitable business)

Other than the entire building and equipment was lost in a fire and the owners are arguing with one another.

Eh, give me a break.
If it happened 6 years ago I was 16 years old when it happened so no chance I cared then.

Haydel's is good, but it's no Hubig's. Not even close.

Brought me from 135 to 165 while sitting at my desk doing my part time job while a freshman in college. Thank hubig for turning me into a man!

Tough group. No its not a Hubig, but I think I said that. Considering Hubig is gone, it not a bad replication IMO. Go ahead and buy a 3 year old Hubig on eBay, I'll eat a fresh Haydels every now and then

While not exactly a Hubig's replacement (they are deep fried, but not covered in glaze), these pies from The Original Fried Pie Shop.* are a treat.
Personally, I like the vanilla cream filled ones, but most are pretty damn good. Still haven't tried a meat filled one yet.

Usually, I pick some up between Shreveport and Dallas, off I-20, Exit 596, in Longview, at the Texas Best Smokehouse / Travel Center, or just grab some at Baker's Ribs in Dallas. There are many other locations though:

* Not sure if these are related to the Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies in David, OK - but they are almost identical, from what I remember.

I think Hubig pies were only up to a buck apiece when they went out of business. The Haydel's pie is $2.75 at Rouse's.
I know inflation and all but that's not really a comparably priced pie.
