cgrand, do you have an experience making RSO? I picked up some RSO chocolate in Massachusetts and it hit me quicker than any edible ever has.

RSO is a concentrate made by dissolving the natural plant oils in a solvent (usually alcohol) and then evaporating the solvent with heat. so the "oil" in RSO is not introduced, its the concentrated terpenes, cannabanoids and fatty acids present in the cannabis flower already.
no surprise it got you goofy. the THC content is much, much higher per dose. RSO is generally applied topically as a treatment for skin cancer.

Eating RSO kinda sucks, it gets stuck on your teeth and its hard to “chew” imo.

better to decarb prior to infusing. also, a sous vide machine is far better as it allows you to control the temperature. 200+ degrees is too high
Posted on 7/30/24 at 2:13 pm to gmrkr5
you can decarb at 240 for 30 mins or low 200’s for a couple hours.
boiling water is 212
the oil temperature won’t ever get above 212. 3 hrs at that temperature is plenty of decarb time.
we can agree to disagree but 212 is not in any way too high either to decarb or to infuse.

220-240 decarb
185 infuse

sous vide certainly works, but i dont have one and i do have a pot of water
the reason i dont decarb first is because i dont want brown/toasted flower as it gives the oil a distinct taste (i prefer a floral taste), and its an extra step. both methods work (as do a number of others)

I have a Magical Butter Machine but I have only made tincture with it. I can then use the tincture by putting a few squirts in a bottle of water or beer.
I also use it to make gummies.
The best was to decarb is Mason jar, 2 cups of water, and 40 minutes in an InstaPot.

Legal Boomer here in Arkansas...
Of course, being in the young prime of my life in the last half of 70's, weed was not hard to find and we took advantage of it.
After college, getting married, having a kid, I kind of got away from it except for rare occasions.
After getting my legal status, I was amazed and somewhat overwhelmed at the sheer number of strains. Still am to some degree. Back then you took what you could get, usually $12/$15 per Oz. commercial Mexican.
Now for my question...
Of course the THC percentage matters in making the oil, but does Sativa/Indica matter and also the terpene profile?
I see good sales on some fairly high THC now and then is the main reason I am asking.

high THC percentages have become a race to excess in my opinion and are creating more problems (PR especially) than they solve. 30+% THC strains are the norm now and I don’t believe they are really necessary
in any event, high % strains ARE useful for infusion as you get more bang for your buck. For topical use, whether you use a sativa, an indica or a hybrid probably doesn’t matter. If you consume it though, do your research and discover what works best for you.
Very generally speaking
-indica: calming, relaxing, couch-lock
-sativa: energy, expressiveness, euphoria
Indicas are best for pain relief, anxiety and stress. Sativas are better for improving your mood, daytime activities, exercise etc.
When i smoke or eat an edible I go for lower THC and a sativa. When I make oil I go for high THC and an indica

Here is a handy little dosage calculator that can be used to figure out your mg/dose that may come in useful for some>> Dosage Calculator
I've used it for making gummies and I think it's a pretty good estimator. Of course, that depends on knowing what strain of herb you're starting with.

Not to mention that you then have access to the leaves. That's all I used to make butter out of back when I had a friend that was a grower. He wasn't an edibles guy so he'd just give me his leaves in exchange for helping him trim. I miss those days!

if you toast it in the oven.... vacuum seal then decarb in water bath
you're method is probably just as effective and less steps

Yes, I have found an Indica that eases my knee pain and helps me sleep.

I'm not chopping up a half O to season a jar of oil. Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent.
Were talking $140ish here, depending on location.
23oz of oil would last me significantly longer than it would take to smoke a 1/2.
Think of it as diversifying your portfolio - that's always prudent.
