I try to follow this. I got a sweet one last weekend. It was elongated, but had the other virtues.

This is how I choose. Dark yellow/orange spot and wide webbing. Usually yields a pretty tasty melon.

I tap with my thumb. The one that sounds the most hollow is the sweetest.

Pick it up and smell it, if it smells sweet it probably is.

The weight thing works too. Heavier than it should be is better

Thump several. Choose the one with a nice, deep, hollow sound.

I mostly go by weight. I have also found that Texas watermelons are better than others- probably because it’s closer so they don’t have to harvest as early, but that’s just a guess.

Last year I picked the one with the largest yellow belly. Was sweet as cotton candy.
