When you have to list a gas station as a restaurant because they have fried chicken, it's pretty sad.

It is no secret. Some of the very best fried chicken I have had came from gas stations. Some of he worst food I have had came from supposedly good restaurants.

Yes. Life is strange at times.

Once again, this is a plate lunch, blue collar town. There is some incredible food being served up in gas stations. Heck, the Lebanese food at Rende's is pretty damn awesome. Sounds like the poster deriding gas station plate lunch spots is just a snob. Great food doesn't have to be served and presented on fine china paired with an expensive wine. It can come in a Styrofoam to-go box from a mom and pop gas station. It just has to taste good.

Kamal's used to be really good, but today, I have to agree.

And BTW, I didn't start this to knock on the restaurants in Gonzales, I started this thread to knock on the lack of choices in Gonzales.

Gonzales does only have 11,000 people, but if you add Dutchtown, Prairieville, and St Amant, you are talking 50k+ people, who go to Baton Rouge for a nice dinner.

I'm not talking white linen, I'm just talking about something above Outback Steak House.

For those you who say Gonzales is too small, look at Roberto's in St Gabriel/Sunshine. This place stays packed and is in the middle of no where.
You build a nice, good quality restaurant, people will come. I'm just saying no one has ever given Gonzales a chance (at least in the 10 years I've been here).
Just look at Sammy's in Prairieville. That place has a wait every Thurs-Saturday night, because it has good quality food.

So you are saying no one in 10 years has had this idea? If it would make money somebody would have done it by now. If you really believe it, open a nice restaurant and get rich.

Your statement above contradicts this.

The fact is Gonzales is a lunch market and fairly low income. A $50 a plate or so place wouldn't make it with BR being so close and the clientele being what it is.

Roberto's makes it and it's in a VERY low income area

It charges $15/plate and draws from Baton Rouge. It's also basically the only restaurant within several miles.

Gonzales has a couple Roberto's esque places around there, but you simply ignored them. They have Mike Andersons, Don's, Kevin's, Latil's, Sno's, Hilltop, Hymel's, The Cabin, etc.

Roberto's is just so damn good that the only Ascension place that can come close is Latil's.

This thread is about Gonzales city limits, so the only two restaurants you listed within the city limits is MA's and Don's.

You are backing my argument. A lot of the restaurants you just listed are in the middle of no where and do great business. Why can't a restaurant like the ones you listed work in Gonzales?
Many people in this thread say it's due to the small population of Gonzales or the low income.

Roberto's gets a lot of support from the employees at the chemical plants nearby. It was my husband's favorite lunch spot when he worked at a nearby plant.

Sno's is right outside the city limits as is Kamal's.

Why does it have to matter if it's within the city limits? Besides, most of those restaurants exist because they're "destinations". The Cabin is a collection of historical buildings over 150 years old. Kevin's and Hilltop are on the Diversion Canal and look out over the water. Latil's is on the grounds of Houma's House, a tourist attraction in a scenic location. Roberto's is also by the river in a historic building. There's not a lot of historic buildings in Gonzales as the town simply isn't that old. People who want to spend the kinds of money to have that "going out" experience need a draw. Gonzales doesn't have that naturally. It's dated, but not old enough to be historic. It doesn't have cutsy antique shops. It has a nice outlet mall near the interstate, and that's where the Mike Anderson's is. The town itself is largely poor, and small. The outlying areas actually have a heck of a lot more people than Gonzales does. It really shouldn't be suprising that such a small city has so few "white table-cloth" options. I doubt you'll find too many other small blue-collar towns that aren't tourist destinations with many more options.

They had the expensive Italian place where the TJ Ribs place is by All-Star. It was supposed to be an expensive date night option and it had good food, they just could not keep enough people coming in. Now maybe now it would work since the flood plus other stuff has brought in more people, but still it has been done. There was also a point where places like Sno's and Mike Andersons were considered more upscale casual, in a shirt with a collar and decent slacks or jeans, not the T-Shirt and shorts you see now.

City limits and a place having an address with the city name are not the same thing

I didn't make the list, I copyied and pasted it from FB (Gonzales Information Center's page). They only listed restaurants inside the city limits.
