Is Monjunis in Baton Rouge worth trying?

What is good? What is worth avoiding?

It’s good, but vastly maligned on this board for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the sauce that’s too sweet for certain people’s unrefined palates.

It has nothing to do with a “refined palate”, Paul. Some folks like sweet tomato sauces and some don’t. It’s simply a matter of preference. Geez.

Bring your own Slap ya Mama to help balance out the sauce.

Too sweet. Anthony’s Deli is right around the corner... I had a meatball poboy there today. Their lunch special was homeade lasagna. Go to Tony’s. If u don’t want a deli, do Pinettas, Gino’s, Nino’s, Dijulio Bros, or Ruffinos

I like the sauce, but the prices increased over the past few years which is why I stopped going. There's much better Italian in BR to be had.

all solid suggestions

Affordable and delicious! Cant go wrong with anything on the menu, but im a fan of the aurora or the Shrimp and Eggplant Extraordinaire.

Quality control has drastically fallen off. Not anywhere near as good as it used to be and that has nothing do with the sauce being sweet.

It was good. Wife had the sampler and I had the shrimp and eggplant extraordinaire. Nothing extravagant but just solid Italian for the price.

If the prices were closer to Gino’s it wouldn’t even be close.

Digulios is still the winner!

Any place that has "extraordinaire" in a name of their dish is a no go.

I like their sweet sauce, so I'd say give it a try. I also buy their Salsa de Pomidoro, sold at local grocery stores

It's an acquired taste. They have a very sweet red sauce that people either love or hate. Personally, I like it, but I get why others don't. Personally, I prefer Pinetta's with their spicy red sauce.

There is a pizza place in Hammond with sweet sauce.

If it's anything like that, phooey. Maple syrup sauce. F Dat Chit

I love it...and it wasn't an "acquired" taste for me. Loved it the very first time I tried it. I actually consider this one of the best Italian spots in Baton Rouge. If you are considering going, go for it! You won't regret it!

Monjunis used to be one of the best. Their chicken parm was insanely good and the portion was insane. It didn't need to be that big. It was fried perfectly though, generous thick sauce , and cheese then thrown in the broiler. Now... weak little chicken piece that usually is burned. Sauce is watered down. I got it three times in a row and it was bad every time. I still kept going though, and went back to my former favorite , Shrimp Aurora. Every time the sauce was again bland and the shrimp were tiny and not good, very strong tasting.

I still haven't written them off. Hell, I might go sit at the bar alone and order something tonight to give another try. But that's only because they used to be really good. The next chance will be the last chance.

The service was bad. Our appetizer plates sat on the table for the entire dinner, and the table was already crowded. We saw our waiter so little that we wee never able to request all the used plates be removed. We were just happy to see him for a refill of wine.
