How are the frozen John Folse foods?

Particularly the gumbo. I have the flu, so of course I'm in no mood to make a gumbo, but I'm craving some. My wife can barely make toast so I was going to send her to the store to get a bowl of this. We live in the sticks so there's no restaurants to get to-go gumbo. Is it edible for a S. Louisianian or is it only suitable for a yankee in New Jersey? And most importantly, does it have tomatoes? That'll be a deal breaker for me.

They're pretty decent in a pinch (my family used to get the etouffee and then add extra shrimp), but you can make better gumbo yourself if you have about an hour to cook.

I remember liking the sausage gumbo.
He is extremely cheap /skimpy with meat in the soups.
Hell, the red beans has almost no meat. It's called red beans and sausage but I had literally no meat one time and my 2nd attempt had one small slice. Never tried it again.
It has been probably 5 to 7 years since I bought any. The price was too much for the meatless gumbo / soup.
Good flavor but skimpy meat and high price equal nope.

Agree on the decent quality and especially the skimpy amount of meats.
And though the most expensive one, his crawfish bisque is really good, especially for a time intensive prep dish and/or seasonal ingredient dish.

Better than a TV dinner.
Not as good as anything a half arse south LA cook could do

The corn and crab bisque was pretty good.

I tried going to johnfolse.com to order some of his goods. All I got was a redirect to a page of ads. Weird that he went with jfolse.com instead.

It’s more weird to me that someone typed in an actual .com address rather than just typing the keyword and clicking the first link

You need one of these to find any meat in them though

Who makes a decent gumbo in an hour? It takes 30 minutes just to prep.

Red beans
Gumbo
Potato Soup
Shrimp and corn Soup
Had em all. They’re all good . Especially the potato soup.

Not worth the price.
Mostly salty water with a little spice. Probably left over crawfish boil. Lucky to find a chinese crawfish in the mix.
If you're around Lafayette, Hebert Specialty Meats has top shelf frozen quarts....
Gumbos, soups, seafood dishes.

Actually, Heberts of Maurice, now has a franchisee store in Prairieville off I-10. And yes, they have nice quarts, and all the other famous Hebert's offerings.
Also have stores in Spring-Tx, Tulsa-Okla, etc..

Which is puzzling since gumbo freezes so well
In theory you should be able to buy a product like this that far surpasses anything your average LA cook could make

quote:good but too damn expensive. Years back Alberstsons used to have the gumbo and crawfish, corn soup hot on their salad bar. A good way to try them out if that is still the case.

Good, but very overpriced like all of his products

Not a fan of his stuff. Seems more river parish style than Cajun.
