I'd be down if I lived in SELA. Nashville is a long way to haul my gear from.

Excuse me for jumping in on this thread, but do you guys ever get together to brew? Bug, your souring knowledge/experience seem super advanced and as an experienced brewer that has only ever kettle soured, I'd absolutely love to have you and anyone interested over for a brew day sometime just to talk over some homebrew.

I haven’t. I usually just invite my friends over during brew day. But that doesn’t mean I’m not game. Also, my knowledge on sours is via books, podcasts, and websites, but I’ll be glad to impart any “wisdom” you may be willing to learn. Sour beer is pretty easy, just requires patience and resisting the urge to touch the fermenter.

I live in Nola and brew in Covington, so I'm not very far from anywhere in SELA usually.

Shoot me an email if you, and anyone else, are interested in scheduling sometime we could grab a beer and meet up.

Will do. I’m in BR, but my wife’s family is from south of New Orleans. We can get something together. Actually bottling my muscadine sour right now. Tastes fantastic uncarb’d.

Bump for Hat Tricks

To answer some of your questions, if you are in Baton Rouge, go to La Homebrew. Tell them you want to start brewing and they will set you up with everything you need.
Also, get the book “How To Brew” by Palmer. Also at La Homebrew and many book stores. It’s the Bible for introductory brewing . Also, designing great beers is another great book, but is more advanced.
La Homebrew also has many recipe kits so you can start there for most anything.
Or, just ask here. Many of us will be glad to share recipes for what they brew.

Check out the first post in this thread. Has many links that may answer a lot of your questions. Or just post em here. I’ll be glad to help if I can.

Looks like a lot to read through with some helpful info.

I'll read through it all and I'm sure I'll definitely have some questions once I get started.

She’s from too far south to be a yat (or maybe not, I need a yat map). I’ll let her know you called her that, though.

I've made a couple beers now and I have one fermenting.

I want to give kegging a try before I invest in one. Does anyone know if there are places that rent out the kegs, CO2 tanks, and all the hook ups? It's just more of an investment than I want to make without knowing for sure I like it over bottling my beers.

If you try it and don’t like it, you can easily sell kegs and CO2 tanks, because kegging rocks and bottling sucks balls

All of this. You will easily get your money back out of it if for some reason you decide not to pursue kegging. They're not making corny kegs anymore so the price is only going up.

I don't know where you live but if you're in a state where there is legal weed, grow shops sell and exchange CO2 tanks much cheaper than homebrew shops.

You'll keg your first batch and I George Foreman guarantee that you will ever question going back to bottling every batch. Special beers? Sure. Your every day beers. frick that nonsense.

I’ll go so far as to suggest that if you make a nice looking kegerator you can actually turn a profit off some poor bastard who just spent 4-5 hours of his life bottling for the last time

Amen to all of this. frick bottling. Buy an old fridge or freezer and a couple kegs plus a CO2 tank. Thank me the first time you drink a beer the day after you kegged it.

This. I only bottle my sours and even then I use the blichmann beer gun hooked up to a CO2 line and bottle from the keg (I bottle condition with yeast, not CO2 from keg).

I bottled all my beers for 2 or 3 years before kegging.... bottling is the worst!

I'm still new to brewing and i think I've only done 4 or 5 different batches. Used my chest freezer to do my lagering in for a black lager i just made. Went ahead and bottled and left the bottles in there to keep cold just to have my thermostat break and cool down to -2.0. keg. Bottles. I guess it would have ended poorly anyways. I need to start getting into kegging and whole grain.
