So, i may or may not have an issue when i get home. Brewed up my pale ale yesterday, everything went according to plan. Well, as i'm inserting the stopper and am pushing in the air lock, the air lock snaps in half. Must have been pretty old. I tried taping it together with electrical tape but that didn't work. I ran out of spare air locks, so my only solution was to use a carboy cap attached to a blowoff tube.
This thing.
Well, i checked on it last night and i had krausen, but no bubbles in the sanitizer solution that the blowoff tube leads to. I checked again this morning, and got a fuller head of krausen, and still no bubbles, which leads me to believe that this cap isn't sealing all the way.
There's nothing i can really do about it until i get home and run to La Homebrew, but should i be concerned of any infection or oxidation coming in? I have a sour in the fermenter right next to it.
Science would leave me to believe that i should be good, as i have very active fermentation going on right now, and the CO2 produced from this should be more than enough to push out any Oxygen ingress. I also believe the carboy cap should do the job from keeping bugs out as long as it's for a short time.
Your thoughts? RDWHAHB???

Hell a lot of people just stick aluminum foil over it.

Hell half the time I just aluminum foil and a rubber band.

Taste of our first IPL is pretty nice. Maybe switch to Pilsner malt next time to brighten it up but it's good.

How does gas escape?
The aluminum foil + rubber band isn't (typically) an air tight seal. It works great in a pinch and better than any other method I've seen with that finicky DuPont strain.
Today was a perfect day for brewing what will probably be my final brew as a BTR resident. Next month we pack up the family and head to Rive Ridge.
Any decent homebrew clubs in the NOLA area?

Crescent City meets out in JP. Good group of guys.

It's not air tight. Keeps particles and bugs out is all. In the fermentation freezer I'd occasionally use no cover at all. Had a mayfly do a suicide nose dive in to a fermenter once which ended that practice. Beer came out fine though.

Plenty of great European beers have been fermented open to the air... Did this thread get unstickied?

It does appear so, along with like 4 other previous stickied threads

Oh good, that should solve all of TD's problems

Good to know they are on top of things around here.
I've used the foil topper method before successfully. It's not like bacteria and whatnot is sneaky when trying to get into a beer.

The one time I put the foil on the carboy loosely (and no rubber band) I had a determined fruit fly crawl between the foil and carboy and make it into my beer.
It did not end well.

Is the Nottoway brewing competition going to be in the bayou circuit?
