Larry on our team handles Porkpourri, so I'll let him know. It doesn't hurt that there was also some bourbon mixed into that pie. I could be wrong, but I think that 2nd place this year might've been a bacon pecan pie.

I love desserts. But I'm glad a non-dessert entry won porkpourri this year. Adding bacon to a dessert seems too simple to me.

I won't ever turn down a piece of that pie though.

They should just have a dessert category. There wasn't the Martins bread category this year, so it could've replaced that.

If I remember correctly they used pork fat in the dough too. I agree that a dessert category would probably be a nice addition (or a savory and sweet distinction within porkpourri).

Yes, bacon fat instead of butter to form the crust.

I could say to add a drink category as well, but that might require adding another thread to discuss.

Mayo category replaced it

We had a mayo category last year.

Forgot about that. For some reason I thought Mayo was a best bite and not a side.

I think it was called a side category last year, and the potato rolls were a best bite or one bite challenge. There was also the camellia beans category too last year.

They had a smoked hummus that was pretty good. No pork in it, but I liked seeing that out there.

Rene has been emailing them out to each team. Everyone that I spoke to said that they'd still like to see the scoring breakdown, but Hogs has never provided that to teams.

Is that customary for smoke offs that don't judge blind?

Every one that I cook in (BCA, KCBS, and MBN) all provide a breakdown of scoring. Hogs is blind like all the other ones. From what I understand, it's the same basic scoring system that MBN and MIM uses without the on site judging for category finals.
