For pepper, I have a Peugeot grinder which is nice. For salt, I have a round salt box with swiveling top (made of carrera marble), which I fill with kosher salt and pinch out what I need. Both were purchased at Marshall's on the cheap. Look at TJ Maxx/Marshall's/Homegoods/Tuesday Morning for deals on these type of accessories.

Why is that needed?

Get the large glass salt and pepper containers from Costco and peel the stickers off.

Or buy a $10 stainless set.

I'm with GG on loving the PepperMate. I checked out some reviews and decided to give it a go and I really like it. It even has this nifty little reservoir which is removable, so you have the choice of grinding the pepper over the food, or grinding it into the reservoir and then you can pinch out whatever you'd like with your fingers. That comes in handy when seasoning a bunch of steaks for instance.

I know my grinder!
I have one for white pepper, one for multi/melange pepper and one for black. I have a few extras as well.

Sometimes, I have tellicherry and sometimes malabar for the black peppers. I find tellicherry to have a bolder flavor.

Degas, I love that reservoir and it grinds a lot at once. The settings work better than anything I've ever had for various grinds.

I was so happy when I went to a restaurant once that had the PepperMate on the tables. Finally I didn't have to have a waiter standing over me with a crappy slow grinder.

Yes, this is a serious thread for pepper lovers.

I've got an old walnut grinder about 10" tall with brass gears. The screw on top allows you to adjust the size of the grind and it's dependable and works well. It has been sitting on my cooktop for over 20 years.

I have a couple of salt boxes, a Dean and Deluca wooden, an Alton Brown glass and I bought a marble dual box at Goodwood Hardware that I keep outside under my bar by my grills. I keep kosher salt and coarse ground pepper in it.

I keep several salts, kosher, different sea salts, some fine grind truffle salts etc...

Only salt grinder I have is the McCormick disposable and it is in the truck console.

I keep kosher salt filled in a container by my stove. Pepper grinders however, every single one I've owned has broken or failed to do the job properly, and I always turn in one direction, and adjusted the grind as you're supposed to. I just haven't found one manual grinder that does it long term. When I have a lot of pepper to grind, I usually just turn to my coffee grinder, same for coriander and the like.

Peugeot is the brand you're probably thinking of

Peugeot is one of the best, but there are variations. My brother is a chef and went to school in France for a while. The Peugeot mills that were sold in Europe were way better than the ones he used back in the states, from what he tells me anyway.
