will eating a "straight" tail kill me? was it really dead before the boil?

They'll back away from answering that every time!

All the dusting does is burn the hell out of my fingers after 5 lbs of crawfish shells cutting up my cuticles.

So how can you mimic true purging like that at home?

A large fish tank.
But seeing as how that's a pain...
A large water inlet into the bottom side of a large icechest. Leave the lid cracked and let the water run. A true huge nibbler wouldn't be THAT hard to build. But is isn't really worth it.
I've never had a crawfish with a muddy taste when cleaned right.
In third world Asia they build cascading streams with levels in seafood restaurants. We flew in some large crawfish from the rice paddies one country over...like lobsters. Yellow fat. Tasted just like home.

That makes me think of something I been wondering. Does the chlorine and other chemicals in tap water kill/effect the crawfish....like fish? Straight tap will kill live fish if not treated first. I always purge by filling the icechest swishing them around to doslodge junk and let it drain then repete....and no salt.

I clean my for hours by running the hose pipe through my ice chest, dumping and cleaning several times per ice chest....
Mine are always squeaky clean also

oes anyone actually enjoy this?
I'm betting some do since plenty of places use that style to season. Plus , there are commercial seasoning blends that are specifically made to be applied to the crawfish after boiling and steamed/melted onto the product...wrap your head around that.

Whenever I find out that the crawfish that I'm eating have not been purged, I immediately tip over the table/pot they're on. I then proceed to stomp on all of them. Never fails to get a unique reaction.
But seriously, you have to clean them. I've eaten crawfish when they've just been dumped out of the sack and in to the pot. Not good. But, if I'm running clean water through the cooler a few times to clean them, what's the harm in throwing in a cheap arse box of Morton's in one of the flushings? Not a lot of effort and nothing ruined. Sure, it doesn't do anything, but it does make some of the people at the boil more comfortable with what they're eating. What's the harm in that?

Because purging them in salt can kill some of the crawfish.

Nothing I guess. When I see someone purging with salt, I assume they don't know what they're doing and I'm usually right.
They're mud bugs. If someone is squeamish about eating them without a salt purge, crawfish might not be for him or her.

I assume you're saying that salt will kill some of them. Never had a problem with a large percentage of crawfish. But, I don't leave them in salted water for long.

Meh
I don't give a damn. The best way to prepare/boil crawfish is drink beer and watch everybody else argue about the right way to do it.

It's the same as the shrimp thread the other day. If you look at the "vien" in a crawfish after purging or without, chances are they look the same. And I absolutely dismiss that they "throw up" while being purged. My point was it makes some people feel better. Has nothing to do with whether they can actually boil.

first you'd need a water well
city water has too many chemicals, they'd be dead long before 24 hrs

Thats what I was wondering...if like fish, they would die in straight tap water.
What about using de-chlorinater like you use to prep water for fish? I have plenty fish tanks and 55gal drums. I could use well water at my office but I dont know how great that is either...wasn't good for my fish straight from the tap...I think its high in dissolved co2...PH is crazy low until i pump air through it for a day.
