Was reading about a new place in Miami that has a club membership of 10K a person and then you get the pleasure of paying 400 to 500 a head every time you dine in.

I'm sorry but I just can't fathom anything being that good. Seems like it's just a status symbol thing at that point.

Apparently there is another place with an initial 10K club fee and a recurring 3500 fee annually. I assume the dine in price point is about the same.

That's just setting money on fire to show people you can do it.

There have always been places in places like that, which are simply trying to be seen as status symbols.

in the age of Instagram celebrity, they are much more of a thing.

A lot more than just food quality. Probably impeccable service, Staff signed NDAs, Table availability when you want, etc...

Lots of clubs out there which exist on the same basis. This is just a "restaurant club"

It's a bar that seats 8 people. You aren't even getting a table

Even better. More exclusive and inaccessible then the more in demand and costlier it will be.

Sushi has always been expensive. Sushi is expensive IN JAPAN.

The omakase, single bar experience is particularly so.

There's only so many people you can seat a night like that, and its priced accordingly.

Omakase is forever seen as a "luxury experience".

The food is pretty and sushi has always been expensive

Dunno if you have ever been to Miami but people blow money there like it's a job. That place makes Vegas blush

The only thing they serve at most of these places is nigiri style

I think there might be a limit on how pretty you can make that but that's just me

Id you don’t think fresh, beautiful fish is pretty.. I love you, but that’s a you problem. It’s the prettiest food I know. Unpretentious, no frills - just gorgeous seafood in its purest form.

I'm not saying it doesn't look appealing

It just doesn't look 500 dollars appealing

So, I'll hedge this somewhat. Yes, dinner seating omakase is expensive in Japan. With that said, it's not uncommon to find lunch omakase in Japan, particularly in larger cities. I think I spent the equivalent of about $20 for a 6+ course omakase "come as you will" bar seating in Tokyo. And it even had an uni course.

It’s expensive to poors, but if you have a $200 mil net worth, get an amazing meal, and a guaranteed seat is $20k a year really that expensive? Miami, LA, Tokyo, NYC, etc you have places that the ultra wealthy play and plenty of others want to be ultra wealthy and try to act like it so they spend that to act like it.

There’s an insane amount of South and central American ultra wealthy that travel through or to Miami to do ‘business’ in the USA.
