I would say GW Fins has been the most consistent restaurant in the city the last twenty years or so.

GW Fins is not a tourist trap. I put it in my top 5 restaurants in New Orleans, especially if you like seafood.
There is no shortage of tourist traps on Bourbon Street, but there are also many world class restaurants around there.

Decades ago, before the remodel, someone recommended this restaurant to me and I just wasn't impressed with my experience. I remember the old interior feeling very cold. Some guy came around with a basket and tongs and plopped biscuits down on plates table by table like it was feeding time at a cafeteria. Took a bite and it was like a mouthful of raw flour. Forgot what I ordered but the entree just didn't knock my socks off. There was a table tent for an upcoming "Tuna Extravaganza", so I did make a reservation for that event being a tuna lover, and it was one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had in New Orleans. Dishes included tuna ordered rare but were virtually medium well, store bought seaweed salad, just a very disappointing meal overall, so I wrote the place off.

Years later and after the renovation, two friends came in from out of town and wanted to try Fins so I gave it another shot and loved everything we ordered. Since then I've been back a half dozen times and is one of my go to restaurants in the Quarter and would highly recommend. So many awesome fish dishes to choose from which rotate nightly. Someone recently suggested I order the "wings" appetizer, which I've always passed over because I literally thought that wings meant chicken wings, but it's fish fins with a good bit of meat on them. Delicious. Someone here mentioned the Scalibut dish which is a house specialty and on the menu all the time, but check out the various fish offered as the menu is printed daily.

I love when they have the surf and turf with dry aged blue fin and wagyu ribeye.

Probably the most underrated restaurant in the city. It is always great and fun and the menu is always fresh and delicious.

Have your wife line her purse with bags and take every biscuit you can get

One of my favorite things on any menu in the city.

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant you like?

??

Many. I realize I am alone on this hill. I have been to GW Fins several times and each time I thought it was a complete joke, a Metairie person's idea of what a fine dining restaurant would be. It was like eating at a 90s chain with elevated food and abysmal decor and service. The biscuits...lol

I have not been since the remodel, hopefully that helped elevate the experience.

Again, I realize this is a minority opinion.

All replies about how great the seafood is are spot on. All I'll add is that service is also outstanding. GW Fins is one of those NOLA restaurants where the staff goes out of their way to make it a great experience. I get the concern about the FQ. The tourists never bothered me, but the uptick in thugs and demented is concerning.

I've been there 4 times with a variety of different people and sizes of groups and this has not been my experience at all, every single time I have thought the service was laughably bad. Its part of why I don't like the place. FAR too casual and shitty for a restaurant of that price point.

Perhaps they got better after the remodel, or it was just luck of the draw, that happens.

If you run into an a-hole in the morning, you ran into an a-hole. If you run into assholes all day long…. Well you know the rest

You say every restaurant sucks in every one of these threads

I do not. I have had many wonderful experiences at many different places.

I think Mandina's sucks, because it does, and I think GW Fins is laughably overrated because of my experiences there. I don't think I have strong opinions negatively on other popular restaurants.

It was far too casual, laughable outdated for the pricepoint. Maybe they have changed since they remodeled from their 1991 chain restaurant decor

I went with 6 people once, and the guy practically threw those shitty biscuits at us and the waiter came to the table and said "What"

That was it. It was puzzling beyond belief.

Again, I realize I am alone on this hill. My opinion is the place isn't good. Is that ok?

It’s just a weird hill.

Biscuits were thrown at you.

A waiter walked up to your table and said “what”

Weird hard on about talking about the 1991 decor

What's weird is you two getting very bent out of shape by someone not agreeing with you.

I don’t really care that you don’t agree. I go here maybe once every few years so it’s not like I really have anything invested in the restaurant. But like I said, you’ve made some weird claims that just likely are made up lol

Yeah that's odd. When was the remodel? I've only been 2 or 3 times over the last 5 or 6 years. I think it's quite good and always say I need to go more often. Just so many other options in the city though.

I'd be interested to know if you ever go again and your opinion changes. Curious if they went through a menu and staff overhaul at the same time as the remodel.

Bunchie, just checking the tape here, and I see you’ve always had a thing against the FQ & it’s restaurants. You have numerous negative posts on Antoine’s and oceana grill as well.

Finn's is a decent place, nowhere close to Lilette, Gautreau's or Clancy's for food or consistency.
